  1. Info on who is performing well and who isn't wanted, needed please. Seems like info that should be shared, transparent. Don't need numbers, just who is up and who is down to last year and goal. Digital page views data for pay wall papers YOY would be bonus too.

  2. I don't think such granular data needs to be shared publicly. Knowing that Salinas is down 12% or Battle Creek is up 3% doesn't help you do your job, but it does give our competition information that we don't get from them in return.

If you want to know how your site is doing, ask your GM/Publisher. Ours lets the entire staff know where we are to plan and to last year every month, in percentages.

  4. To 8/09/2012 6:44 PM:

You don't think it's callous to lay off a 30-year employee because he's over 55, and replace him with another employee half his age making half his salary?

As for those who say that the discussion about how Ron Liebau was laid off a year before his untimely death somehow diminishes his accomplishments, don't you think that it's a damning statement about how Gannett treats its employees?

Gannett has spent the past several years trimming its payrolls of hard-working middle-aged employees, saying they're stuck in the print past and just not able to make the transition into digital.

    Bullshit.

Ron was one of those middle-aged employees who led the Cincinnati newsroom into the digital age and he still was considered expendable.

    1. He's around, arranging for a visionary confab at a downtown museum next month. But he expects people to make it from Tysons Corner at 7 p.m. on a week night? He's so silly.

  7. A reorganization at The Indy Star. Business must not be good. Isn’t it funny how upper management does a reorg when things are bad and they don’t know what to do. Grasping at straws.

  8. Someone in the earlier thread asked about the age discrimination lawsuit filed against The Enquirer. Here is a story about it.

I think more defendants have since joined the action.

  15. Shreveport is in trouble. The revenue numbers are tanking and there ain't anyone in charge that knows anything about the community or the paper. I am praying I can leave this place before the door hits me in the ass as they shut it down for good.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Quite frankly, Ganett has never been willing to ADMIT that the over 50 employees DID learn digital. If you were over 50, you weren't "supposed" to be that adaptable. Gannett is nothing but a bunch of stereotypes!

  17. Shreveport Bailey has not realized that revenue numbers will continue to fall unless he gets to know his staff (all of them) and his community. Just yesterday at an employee meeting he was asking the whereabouts of an employee that was sitting on the front row right in front of him. Get out of your office and move around to find out who your employees are. Get out the building and move around the community so advertisers will know who you are. Ad director should not be blamed for your shortfalls with our advertisers. If ad director reports to you then you should have to go too. Shreveport please tell your publisher that ADVERTISERS DO BUSINESS WITH PEOPLE THEY KNOW!!!!!!!

  18. CINCI

Must be losing tons of money, to dump so many people, so fast.

Get out, while the getting is still available, y'all.

Capt. Gannettoid is way over his/her head. Res ipsa.

  19. 1:07 "resigned effective immediately" from an advertising director can only mean "fired". Take it from someone that had to resign effective immediately.

  20. Hack again?!

  21. All of this goes to my point (and I'm not looking for granular data).. We would like to know which of the Gannett papers are performing better than expected, and which ones are at the bottom of the heap. It doesn't mean they aren't doing OK in their market, but it does pin them against the rest and the economic conditions. WE should know who the revenue stars are - at least.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes,Shreveport, you don't resign effective immediately and leave you stuff in your office.

  23. What a joke, as if learning "digital" was some major skill that only people under 30 could do. Its not like reporters from the dotcoms are coding HTML or creating Java scripts. Give us a break, it was people who are now in their 50's WHO CREATED digital -- they did it in their 30's!

Common use of the internet, computers, and all things digital now nearly 2 decades old, kiddos, so the under 30's had better create a new technology or learn to respect those who paved their way.

    1. 4:26 I heard three reporters talking LAST year. One said to the other two, "if they think I'm going to post a breaking story on the web before it appears in the paper, they are going to be very disappointed." that is the difference.

  24. As a consumer, Deal Chicken offers are more and more restrictive lately. Not like Groupon or Livingsocial. More and more bizarre restrictions. Pizza restaurant, but not after 5 pm. Mon-Fri restrictions, etc. Very bizarre. have just noticed this recently. Will read the fine print in detail or just not buy Deal Chicken vouchers at all.

  25. 3:02 - I'm afraid it's a little late to be asking for that. Bailey doesn't mingle with the community unless he's being led around by one of his employees. It's pathetic. Very few people in Shreveport know who the publisher is and by now they no longer care. The numbers will continue to fall because there isn't anyone left in the advertising department who knows the clients and has an established relationship with them. I cannot believe how far under our revenue numbers are from last year. Shreveport needs competent leadership again and we need it NOW!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Good luck Peter Gray! Revenue is down and someone has to take the fall for it because certainly Bailey will not. He is not a good leader for Shreveport. Sorry Barber, you can stop worshipping him because he does not walk on water.

  28. What ever happened to Teflon Tony ? He left The Journal News in a State of Emergency, and more than likely he's driving some other publication into the ground.

Let's take a look at the Journal News.
    They don't print it.
    They don't transport it.
    Outsiders handle home-delivery.

Sounds like they're in BIG trouble.

  30. 5:52, anyone who still thinks like that at Usa Today - and there are plenty of them - needs to start rethinkingbtheir career choice. Kramer and Callaway come from a digitail brand thats more wire service than newspaper. Those who want to succeed in the new era shoild be prepared to write early and often. The Slugs in Money can no longer hide in their comfy bureaus. Andnfor those elsewhwere in theaper once a week or less, you are in for a rude awakening. kramer detects bullshit and lazyness unlike your typical Gannettoid. He is already planning on shifting people from male work jobs to tasks that will wring out productivity. Time to get off the gravy train.

  31. 11:47 The first phase of ABM's assimilation of Gannett sights took place in early July. The second phase will be implemented soon after the new year. Once completed, all Gannett sights will be under their control-resistance is futile.
