  1. I stayed at a JW Marriott this past week and received USA TODAY at my room. It did not appear on the folio and I was told there was no charge, does this get counted as circulation?

    1. Yes. Within ABC rules, as long as the hotel pays a minimum of $.01 for the copy, it is counted. In this case, the hotel paid much more than $.01.

  4. Yes it is circulation, and yes you are charged on the bill (it's in tiny print when you check in...used to be a dime, now it's 30-50 cents, depending where you are)

  5. Yes - it counts. Within ABC rules, if a hotel pays at least $.01 for the copy, it counts. And in the case of JW Marriott, they paid about 30X that amount.

  7. 6:46 I thought a newspaper had to receive at least 50% of the cover price to be counted by the ABC as paid.

  11. Jim . . . I thought, like you, that there was a "50% of retail" paid requirement by ABC. Have a look at how ABC defines "paid circulation".

    Doesn't seem to be much pretense about what ANY subscriber pays. Call it the "One-Cent Solution".

    If you want to see some real prestidigitation, (c'mon, anybody who ever watched CBS Cable LOVES that word!) check out ABC's requirement for "Verified Circulation". It's really strict.

    One of the limitations is, for NIE, that you can only claim as many "Verified" copies as people IN THE CLASSROOM. Really laying down the law there, ABC is.

  12. One of Florida Today's stories (by someone else of course) Saturday started on page one, went to page 6. Fine. Nothing new there. But as you read along you get to a paragraph the ends....just ends....with no comma, period, turn to page such and such....nothing. And it's not the first time. It must be true...the inmates ARE getting control of the asylum!

    "The company's president and CEO Gracia Martore, said that they expect circulation revenue growth in the range of 25% as the, “demand for their digital marketing services is strong and already attracting significant new client relationships.”

    You gotta be kidding me. The only way circ. revenue will go up 25% is if they raise the price another 50% and lose half their subs left in the process.

  16. 5:34, I'm sorry, I specifically asked if I was going to be charged and they said no and it did not appear on my folio at checkout. And as for circulation, there was a time when hotel circulation was valued (Blue Chip Accounts), but I suspect with the dramatic drops in circ, the percentage has grown. It was also interesting to see how many USA TODAY's were still sitting in front of doors at noon!

Say what you will about her, but you really don't need to go to the transcript to know that it was certainly NOT our intrepid CEO, but rather this "Fool" blogger, who somehow managed to confuse circulation revenue apples with digital marketing services oranges. Indeed his overall grasp seems pretty shaky.

  21. Does anyone know if any statistical study has been done on circulation using the old ABC rules? It might be interesting to see 2010 circulation figures using 1972 ABC rules.

    Actually I think, strictly on quality, Reuters will provide the best images. USPW will win on quantity, though, FWIW.

  34. Here's a real head-scratcher from Monday's Arizona Republic. Classic double-speak. No byline.

    Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane will not be attending an election forum Thursday hosted by the Coalition of Greater Scottsdale after the advocacy group's political committee endorsed another candidate, his campaign treasurer said.

    Lane, who is seeking re-election, faces challengers Drew Bernhardt and John Washington in the Aug. 28 primary.

    The group's political committee endorsed Washington, according to its website. The Coalition of Greater Scottsdale hosts the nonpartisan forums but does not endorse candidates, said coalition chairwoman Sonnie Kirtley.
