  2. Gannett Company’s Media Network of Central Ohio, which prints and distributes Ohio State’s student newspaper The Lantern, under a new deal will soon manage the paper’s advertising and business operations, starting July 1.

The move left some students "blindsided," the newspaper reported yesterday.

  3. Like so many others around here, Lee Jones made his share of mistakes for sure. But, unlike so many others around here, he's a good and decent guy who got caught-up in the Banikarim meat grinder. And like so many others who have left this place, Jones will land on his feet and probably quite nicely.

  8. You keep saying people can get news on their local Patch site. What if your town, like mine, does not have a Patch site? I have absolutely no way of getting local news now that the Gannett papers have virtually none.

  9. An interesting take on the value of local content and the folly of news aggregation. GCI's strategy to get out of the local news business - and turn USAT into a ad network with aggregation - runs contrary to this view.

  10. Jim, thanks for the link to The Lantern story. The comments were interesting, too. Here's one of them.

The Gannett folks are desperate after they ran their newspapers into the ground by firing nearly everyone and cutting every corner conceivable for short-term profit. And then, lo and behold, no one then read their papers and advertisers fled. Now they are in deep trouble. This can't be good news for the student paper. If Gannett can't figure out a way to suck it dry, I'd be surprised.

  11. 11:31 a TV station in Green Bay, Wisc., has a story today about a guy being charged for a fatal crash last week into a group of motorcycles. The Fond du Lac paper, the city where the guy is in jail and was charged, still has yesterday's story up.

That's where you get current news, from the TV web sites.

  13. 1:09 Didn't Gannett once pay an enormous sum for a publisher of a college newspaper -- maybe $1 million?

I recall it led to big trouble in Springfield, Mo., involving a condom-giveaway at local university.

  14. I've been to four Gannett sites today - Courier-Journal, Cincy, Phoenix and Asbury - and only two (C-J and Asbury) informed me I had a limited number of story views available. The paywalls seem to be arbitrary.

  15. 1:22 ... no people available to cover news in Wisconsin today that is not part of the Walker/Barrett recall election. All Walker/Barrett all the time.

  16. Top news story on Salem website is The cupcake caper: A serch for buttercream frosting leads to four stops
Thank god they went to a paywall - giving that information away would be a crime.

  17. I'm sure Patch has LOTS of viewers/readers. But I don't know anyone outside of media people who have even HEARD of Patch. Maybe that makes me Pauline Kael.

    HILARIOUS!!!!
Trump tweets his cancellation of USAT, and calls the paper and founder Neuharth both LIGHTWEIGHTS, HAH!

  22. USA Today. YOU'RE FIRED!

Mr. Trump, we agree. Now would you also aim the finger at Hunke, Mucek, Ellwood, Frank and Weiss?

  23. Let's put the gal pals into the Trump celebrity apprentice and see who gets fired? I say in order will be Frank, Ellwood, Micek, Motiff, Weiss, Murcko and Martore. Winner will be Banikarim.

  24. I would say this is another humiliation for USAT but there have been so many what does it matter anymore.

  25. Hopefully we can sell Trump an ad to fire us publicly in our " digital newspaper ". We could sure use the revenue.

  26. I realize, that I am a $1 short and a day late on the issue of working more than the scheduled time one day, and coming in late/leaving early the next day, but here is what the Florida Fair Labor Act states (and I am paraphrasing):
A person on a set schedule, who is asked to change his/her work hours in a given pay period, can do so if due notice is provided (weekend days doesn't count here). If not, all hours worked during the shifts affected will be paid at the rate of 1.5 hours per hour worked.
The way it reads, the person should be paid overtime for anything that isn't part of their regular shift (if Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm and is changed to 5pm-2am (even if just pushed an hour every day like 9am-6pm) or different work week such as Sun-Thu) for every day the entire week.
The keywords are "due notice" which aren't clearly defined and can be interpreted any which way you want.

One would assume that due notice is at least 24 hours or for permanent changes a few days or a week, but guess how Gannett and the local sites interpret due notice

  27. Neuharth with his 40 year old picture should have kept his senile mouth shut instead of calling Trump a clown a few days ago in Florida Today. Don't worry Donald, I'm sure you'll find all the copies of the USA Today rag you could ever want tossed on hotel lobby floors.

  28. Is Trump pulling the plug on USA today in his hotels?

  29. Romensko funny. "who knew you could actually subscribe to USA Today?"

  31. 11:31, if you are worried about getting your local news and don't have a Patch site available, I'm assuming that you are in a smaller community. I'm in a similar situation and here's my "Plan B" for local news if our local Gannett paper is shuttered:

    1. Bookmark your local funeral homes' websites so you can get local obits.
    2. Set up an account on nixle.com to get local crime reports and/or check to see if your city and county put crime reports online. If so, bookmark them.
    3. Go to weather.gov and search for your area forecast by zipcode and set up a bookmark to that link to get accurate NOAA info.
    4. Bookmark local TV station websites and check their news of your area daily.
    5. Set up a google news alert with the name of your community so you receive emails about stories written in sources you may have otherwise missed.
    6. Find or start a good local blog that will allow discussions with other community members about local interests in its comments sections.
    7. Learn to love Craigslist for classified ads.

It's sad and awful to have to contemplate doing all of those things, I know.

By taking the steps above however, you've got news, weather, crime reports, and obits available to you digitally; the meat of any daily newspaper. Sadly, what you will be missing are the insightful analyses offered by smart, experienced journalists that will help you interpret what you are seeing and which flesh out the data... that is until those journalists figure out a way to deliver the news independently from the current corporate structure or another paper starts in your area to fill the void created by Gannett.

  33. For those wondering, Trump is responding to Al Neuharth's column on Friday, which called Trump a "clown" who would sink Romney's election unless Mitt distanced himself from him.

The two went at it pretty intensely and this is Trump's latest shot. Whole thing is silly.

SERIOUSLY? You do one-day random checks of some papers and decide that this tells the whole story of the work being done there? Get over yourself. Go cry somewhere else.
