An independent journal about the Gannett Co. and the news industry's digital transition
What should my purpose be this week, Martore and Banikarim?
The agency that came up with the "purpose work" is GSDM in Austin Tx. Maryam has been trying to find a way to bring it into every aspect of Gannett in order to justify the project. So far, it's resulted in language on the website, memos from Martore touting "Hometown Advantage" and now a Purpose Board at CP.Can you imagine how much more revenue might have been generated had Banikarim and her team focused on Gannett's business models and not this lame 1980's approach to "branding". So much energy wasted to speak to themselves instead of finding ways to bundle assets for revenue.Banikarim might be good at gaining PR. But she is the wrong person to help grow revenue.

Gannett is firing reporters so it can steal stories from other news outlets. This weekend the Poughkeepsie (NY) Journal got caught ripping off content from the Daily Freeman in nearby Kingston -- and the Journal didn't fess up until the Daily Freeman reporter let Jim Romenesko know about it.
More and more people in the community where I live are talking about how dissatisfied they are with the paper as of late. When I tell them there is about to be a paywall put in place and the cost of their printed paper is about to double, every single person says they will cancel their subscription. Sounds like a solid business model to me.
Shout-out to Romenesko for this item: Gannett is buying sports aggregator Quickish from its founder and will integrate it into USA Today Sports Group.
What is Kate Marymont's "purpose"? Do we even still have a vice president/news anymore?
9:19 AM, you can multiply that by 82.Less content, reporters and photojournalists, narrower and thinner newspapers, and a doubled price is only a business model for corporate suicide.
Kate hasn't had a purpose in years except to take home a paycheck. Don't look for leadership there.
Jim hasn't had a purpose in years, other than to beg for money.Notice how often he has to screen comments? Either he's under attack constantly, or Gannett has him under its thumb.
2:04's purpose is evident: to resurrect mockish insults. Good for 2:04! Sure, it's nostalgic..., but high school crap was some time ago. Maybe that childish sort can counter the issues raised on the blog (I myself don't find other viewpoints than my own to be threatening), rather than deride the blog's owner. Probably not, but I can dream.
2:04 thanks for the laugh! Gannett has tried to have Jim "under their thumb" for years....and the blog keeps going with employees from every site and CP weighing in at some time or another. It's the only real forum worth visiting to learn what is going on with Gannett.Execs read it, lower levels read it....it's way more powerful than anyone at Gannett is willing to say out loud....but believe me, they know and they read it.
Interesting thread. Keyword: "interesting." Something characteristic of this blog, no matter some of the garbage vs. useful information. And I bet 2:04's an exec: the rank disdain is characteristic of the types which Gannett hires. In any case, I know -- for a first-hand fact -- that the execs locally and at the Palace read this blog, and also comment -- some even sympathetic. Most, though, squeamish personalities with a loyalty complex toward a company that will ream them truly, too.
Jackson's Clarion-ledger's front page story today was on home brewed beer legislation! Needi I say more?
Curious to see how the local web sites near NYC handled the Tonys, since I love Broadway from afar. Westchester did great, but the lede entertainment story on all three NJ Gannett websites today is a story posted June 6: "Puscifer is not a band." Today is June 11, the day after the Tony Awards. There's no story about the show or the winners on any of these sites, only a Tony photo gallery on Asbury site. It might as well not have happened for the Daily Record or Home News Tribune. The only photo gallery on the Record's site was posted almost a month ago. And it looks like nearly all the stories on each site are repeated twiceIsn't entertainment a passion topic for some places? Why would anyone pay for this out of date, repetitive content?
Newsday-Westchester/Rockland claimed another false 'exclusive.' This one focused on the state-mandated evacuation plans if Indian Point nuclear power plants meltdown etc.Now The Journal-News has written and delved into the how ridiculous the 10-mile radius evac plan is for nearly 20 years or more. This article neglects pointing out that Rockland County, at first, refused to provide an evac plan. But the county relented when the state threatened to put in it's own plan.I guess Newsday never covered this issue so it's exclusive to the editors and reporters.
Wasnt USA Today a presenter of the Tony Awards? Where's that feed?
Curious to see that supposed advertiser "guest list" for all the Beusse and Hunke parties at the US Open this week.
Gannett Newspapers SUCK! They are the worst read I have ever seen in the past 20 years, 2 pages of sports, 1 page of business..It nothing but a rag, no one buys it because it has nothing in it. Way to go to the Bitchs who run the company. You did your job oof taking down a once fine News company

5:21i saw that too. The new Indian Point reporter at Cablevision really has the wool pulled over his editors' eyes. He keeps dragging out press releases and rewriting Journal News stories and they keep slapping exclusive on them. They think he's some kind of whiz bang and he's really just a rewrite guy. It's on the Cablevision/Newsday editors now. They're letting it happen. Readers are laughing about it too. It's fun to watch. Even the former TJN guy who works there is getting away with it.
Perhaps I missed it, but the link in the Haley Rushing bio takes readers to the wrong Purpose Institute -- one devoted to "Apostolic ministry, Apostolic Methods, Apostolic Doctrine." They are, they say, "a tool in the hands of local church pastors, regional leaders, and missionaries throughout the world to raise up leaders for the harvest."The difference is ThePurposeInstitute.com versus PurposeInstitute.comBut after watching that clip of Rushing on stage, isn't that exactly the same "trust in your purpose and you'll be saved" evangelism she's selling?
6:29 Gannett has NEVER been a fine news company. And yes they suck!
Gannett has been cutting the legs off their newspapers for years now. Since the shareholders have been losing money in bunches the last few years also, why haven't they done something about it? Isn't there a way to oust all these people who have been killing the company or are they somehow still making money in spite of sales drying up and stock prices staying way down from where they once stood?
So, 5:21, posting again about what a great job TJN is doing vs. a minimally staffed startup. You must be mighty proud of yourself! Imagine, a news org that still has dozens of reporters, editors and photographers despite all the cuts out-performing a brand-new staff of, what, six or seven? Sounds like someone is pretty desperate to impress the brass, and thinks these lame boasts will hide the lack of brainpower at the top and the continuing decline of both circ. and traffic numbers.
question for the masses: I'm hourly but I get calls in the evening for problem solving... what ought my compensation be for interacting with these calls?
The size of the staffs of The Journal News and Newsday are heading in opposite directions and will be about the same in a year. The Newsday/News 12 operation will stomp out what remains of The Journal News. Don't be so smug TJN lackey.....The clock of your career is ticking
I'd say it depends, 3:35. How long do these phone calls take?If it's only a couple of minutes, don't waste everyone's time. If it's a half hour or so, claim it.For instance, copy editors frequently have to call reporters at home to clarify what they wrote. I don't know of any reporters who charge for that time.
7:06 and 5:21 good luck to you. You work for Cablevision. Look what that company's done to Newsday Long Island. Sad. Nobody disputes the difference in the size of the staffs. We know you can't win. Just stop regurgitating TJN's stories.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
