Big Al: two other women who could have run GCI

Neuharth
In his weekly USA Today column this morning, retired Chairman and CEO Al Neuharth identifies those two women, as he describes how Gannett's first female chief executive, Gracia Martore, "wowed" shareholders at Tuesday's annual meeting.

Earlier: How Neuharth's mother, Christina, shaped the company that became today's Gannett.

  1. Who is writing his tripe these days? Irony: "Unfortunately, back in those days, women had a much tougher climb."

Part of the problem was you, Big Al, and your eye for slim blonde women, both in your personal and professional life. And the boys club and yes men you surrounded yourself with.

  3. Among his Gannett/Freedom Forum income streams, he gets 100 large a year for trash someone else writes.

  4. I think his column should be discontinued and replaced with the "On The Road" newsletter from Maryam. It could be filled each week with her latest interviews, digital insights, and photo shoots with DC celebrities.

    1. Great idea, but maryam wants a photo three times the size of a mug shot.

  5. She didnt wow anyone at the meeting except a semi-alert Lil Al, who should donate his six figure columnist for life contract to a fund for journalists Martore has shit canned.

  6. 2:52 - that would be fitting. All sizzle...no steak.

  7. Wasn't it Neuharth that said of a buxom woman who made the front page of USA Today once, "... at least get the tits above the fold!"

  8. I seldom agree with Al, and I certainly doubt any sincere motives on his part in writing this column, but I am pleased to see him salute Jennings. I dealt with her back in the 1980s. She was committed to attracting talented young journalists into Gannett newsrooms, and in keeping those already there. Today, Gannett HR seems bent solely on harnessing people who can feel the paltry newsholes at the lowest possible cost.

  14. 5:30 The quote, according to this People magazine story, is: "When you run a picture of a nice clean-cut all-American girl, get her tits above the fold."

  15. Thanks Jim, I knew the "tits" remark was somewhere in Al's past.

  18. See if Hopkins knew his Gannett history he'd have asked why one highly successful firmer female Gannett leader wasn't on his list.

  19. This was Neuharth's list; not mine.

I'm surprised he didn't include Cathie Black, the former USA Today publisher.

  22. Speaking of Gary Watson, they should bring him and his kick ass style back. Much needed throughout the organization.
