  1. Any idea how much the Deal Chicken debacle has cost the company?

  3. No Santorum anywhere...3 Tv stations or Fl. Today. martin gets all the front page/first page around here. Sad.

  4. No Santorum news on paywalled tallahassee.com either. Meanwhile, the competing TV station had it as their lead story at 2:29pm. With a bunch of comments.
The first day of FB only commenting resulted in pageview numbers 25% LOWER than the same day last year, I've been told.
But don't bother Fort Collins with that fact:

  5. Uh-oh. Undoubtedly fearing rejection, Enquirer editrix Carolyn Washburn has pulled out of a Cincinnati charity auction offering lunch dates with Enquirer personnel. With 19 days left in the auction, no one was willing to place a $50 opening bid for the pleasure of dining face-to-face with the Enquirer's new battle-ax. No explanation was offered for Washburn's pullout. Apparently, people are not too keen on lunch dates with Enquirer veterans. No opening bids so far on Jackie Demaline, Janelle Gelband, John Kiesewetter or Polly Campbell. The only staffer to draw an opening bid is 20-something Laura Baverman, and if you've her new Glamour Shots photo, the bid could be of the ulterior sort. http://tinyurl.com/6ltn2tc

  6. Anon@1059P: Orlando TV is covering the Trayvon Martin case because he died in the stations' viewing area. Horse-race politics do not trump a major regional story.

  8. 11:55, I agree, although I would submit the Martin news is a major national story. I'm glad Orlando and the Miami Herald are giving the story such prominence.

  9. It's a major national circus.

  12. This Jim Romenesko piece about a newly hired reporter issuing a press release about getting hired at the Wilmington News Journal as an "enterprise reporter" when he's really going to be a night cops reporter has the staff here going nuts...

  16. E-mail was down for a good chunk of the afternoon in Appleton as well.

  17. What?.......Wilmington still has staff???

    ReplyDelete
  18. And now the guy's been fired for using the company logo and quoting from Ledford's press release. What a joke.

I guess there really is only one reporter allowed to be a prima donna in Wilmington. The paper writes stories about him whenever he wins prizes, but ignores everyone else.

  20. So why is Hunke going to Asia exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 6:38 My first thought was that firing him was overly harsh.

But I see that he's an experienced journalist. The whole episode shows very bad judgement. If you were the hiring editor, wouldn't you now worry about his judgement in basic journalism?

  23. Jim,
How about starting a new buyout thread? Maybe it could focus on how the process is working for folks and be a place to share questions about benefits, who to call, what the goodbyes were like, etc.
    Thanks!

  24. Poor judgment for sure to brag about getting hired by a Gannett shit-kicker.

  25. 11:55 & 12:03...it's a "major news story" because the liberal media says it's so. If martin was a white kid it wouldn't have gotten a second day's mention. Other attacks on white people by blacks over the last couple of weeks has proven that. Just more proof of the biases that turn people off to all media.

  26. OK, quoting from the private correspondence may be a bit over the line--but we do it all the time when politicians, celebrities et. al. are involved. It takes this kind self-promotion to build a brand in the digital world. And come on, "use of a logo on a personal site"--when the company is asking us reporters to tweet, blog, text and Facebook about Deal Chicken?
Interesting that a poster above says the position was night cops. I wonder if it was presented to Brooks as that.

  27. Trayvon is now a household word here in New York State. It's a major national story that reverberates everywhere that people give a damn. He's also not the only one in that situation. It works the other way too. Try a search for "black gang beats white guy"

  28. Ledford is a bombastic blowhard. Worst. Boss. Ever. He probably fired the guy because he was jealous of the publicity.

  30. Firing Brooks was just another amateur mistake made by the Philly rejects now running The News Journal.

Davidsaurus Ledford should have been shown the door years ago, and Stoney LaDouche wrecked one of the most profitable papers in the USCP.

These people have no vision, or any idea what it's going to take to move this business forward.

  31. 11:17pm, come on, are you saying using a 4-5 year old picture of the kid and booking photo from 4 years ago for the guy wasn't bias? Give me a freaking break.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Using the company's logo (TM)?

Way, way out of line. Had to go -- or lose (TM) legal standing.

Now, time for law school, young man.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
