Phoenix | Zidich: no forced job reapplications here

Zidich
Arizona Republic Publisher John Zidich says employees at the daily newspaper and KPNX-TV in Phoenix are not being required to reapply for their jobs, the Phoenix Business Journal said late yesterday, following reports that other Gannett employees have recently been told to re-interview for work.

A Gannett spokeswoman had previously told the Business Journal that the company does not comment on personnel matters, when she was asked if the reapplication process was going on with Phoenix units.

  1. Of course you're not required to reapply. When your current job evaporates, you're entirely welcome to leave.

  3. And John may not have gotten the call yet. And be told "Hay we need more money for some VP to retire, MORE FURLOUGHs"

  4. This passage in the story was most interesting:

Zidich said he didn’t know whether other Gannett units were having employees reapply for jobs. “I have no idea,” he said.

Fort Collins, where exempt editors have been asked to reapply for their jobs, reports to Zidich. Anyone who's been around Gannett 2 minutes knows that such a step could never occur without the knowledge and approval of the regional president.

So he's either criminally clueless (very unlikely), was misquoted (also very unlikely) or lying. I don't see another option.

  5. Boy did Zidich stick his foot in his mouth again or what? "I have no idea" Thats the first thing he has got right in awhile but not on the point in his responce.

  6. If only we could believe him. After the whole Fiesta Bowl debacle he's got zero credibility, both in the building and in the community. And the line about not knowing what other Gannett papers are doing? He's either completely clueless or lying. Or both.

  7. I like this part of the Business Journal's story:

The Gannett Blog, which for years has covered the media company’s inner workings, executive pay, furloughs and layoffs, has reported of the practice of having workers reapply for positions at some newspapers.

Zidich said he doesn’t read that company blog.

  9. 7:24 "Falsehood," I believe, is a reference to the truthiness of Zidich's statement to the Business Journal.

Zidich said the spear and pelt crowd would have to wait and see if it would have to reapply.

  11. if he wants to lie like that, he has a future as an executive editor.

Of course, he'll have to re-apply for the job!

  13. Why anyone would want to keep this Fiesta Bowl tool around speaks volumes about the company he works for.

He and Washburn are certainly stars at Gannett. proven leaders who give us hometown advantage.

  14. Hopefully VP/ND of KPNX Mark Casey will have to reapply for his job, he's been failing at it for years. He's more qualified to sit in the booth in the parking garage than he is running a newsroom err Information Center! Zidich needs to go too, none of these managers has a clue.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
