  3. Pointroll Investigation3/24/2012 8:17 AM

Pointroll is in some deep shit with their largest client, Ford Motors. It appears that the investigation being led by US Congressman Henry Waxman's office is digging up some nasty info into the sales and operations at Pointroll. It is calling into question the

Apparently, when Mr. Gatto mentioned that Pointroll was "just testing" placing cookies on Safari browsers, it seems like the "test" was with the the largest car manufacturer and lasted formal long while.

Furthermore, this was not a "test", but a behavior that was part of the sales and marketing strategy of Pointroll. Meaning, this was a "product enhancement" that Pointroll deliberately built AND sold AND deployed WITHOUT client knowledge.

Placing a cookie on any browser that is set without permission, is illegal and is an act of desperation. Pointroll, with declining revenues and earnings is showing just how desperate they are.

I believe some heads will roll with this and it may just end up with Pointroll being shut down completely. As Gracia Martore recently stated "Gannett does not have the stomach for another federal investigation". Especially when Gannett price fixes it's retrans fees and colludes with other broadcasters when negotiating with the large cable operators.

  7. 25 of 223 — more than one in ten!

And to think of all the clueless "journalists" who come on this site daily and blame everybody under the sun but themselves for the demise of the newspaper business.

  8. Way to go Pruittski, break the company and leave for the AP. Taking your millions with you. How much you getting?

  9. 6:41 GPS is a joke and shreveport production manager is much of the problem Pete you better look out before you be cleaning house like you just did in Lafayette

  10. Also note for Shreveport, all five of the advertising managers who were told that they would need to re-apply for a job if they wanted one were over 40. The entire management team with the exception of the advertising director is wiped out. And there is an open target on his back. Strange, very strange.

  11. Let's hope Washburn takes the buyout in Cincinnati. She'll perform her final act of subservience to her corporate handlers by urging 20 minions to take the guillotine. (She should receive a bonus for each lopped-off head.) The one ray of hope that we had for her -- that a homer would want to raise the Enquirer's game to impress her high school teachers -- was pretty much been snuffed out. Hard to believe that an editor could be more untalented and aloof as Tom Callinan, but CW pulls it off.

  12. Why is it every manager or editor or boss in the company is incompetent? I just wonder. Every post shows it. Why doesn't the Board get rid of all managers, bosses or editors and then put the people who do all the work in charge. That seems like a simple solution to the problem. Why not?

  13. There is going to be one hell of a class action lawsuit against Gannett on age discrimination. It is going to start with Hunke and his over-50 firings at USA Today and roll right across the hall to Gannett and Martore's off with their heads thumbs up on anyone over 50.

And trust us when we say that Gannett will not survive this. The wheels are in motion.

  14. A message to the over-50 Gannett sheep who are afraid of filing an age discrimination lawsuit: I know of several age discrimination suits filed in the past, and Gannett has quietly settled every one.

  15. Who hired Washburn? Buchanan.
    Who tolerates Washburn’s behavior? Buchanan.
Who’s behavior does Washburn’s mirror? Buchanan.

See the pattern. That’s the real problem.

They are moved into positions to stay out of the way, because they are incapable of doing the job they manage. THE OLD BUDDY SYSTEM STILL IN EFFECT GCI policy for years. What else do you expect from this company

  17. 11:48 - What size of settlements? Worth the cost and effort?

What about ADA suits? Does Gannett have similar records of settling? I know of two cases pending (FL and AZ).

  19. Buchanan is a textbook example of a misplaced worker. At a time when the Enquirer needs a visionary, an inspirational leader and someone with an eye for talent, she waits for orders from Gannett, gets into bed with every institution and business organization that will take her, and regards her employees as inferior subjects. She has almost completely dismantled the editorial (opinion) function of the paper without ever explaining why. She seems to have no problem with the weakness of the front page and the paucity of local news. If she had any sense of accountability to her readers at all, she herself would have written a column explaining how the Enquirer managed to nominate a Woman of the Year who had serious financial problems in the paper's own coverage area. I suspect the next time we hear from her, it will be how the paper is taking steps to improving its watchdog role by buying out or laying off a couple of dozen newsroom people in the coming week.

  20. We have many buchnans and washburns at usa today. the fill the ranks of the business side, editorial and digital. No bad deed goes punished. No big mistakes are ever held up as lessons learned. the sociopaths, liars and incompetents continue to be rewarded and promoted. even extreme fuckups get new positions and more power.

  21. Had Buchanan not so callously destroyed so many jobs and created such irreparable harm to entities she’s controlled I’d almost feel sorry for her as her actions indicate there’s much she doesn’t know.

    • Strong leaders encourage openness and collaboration, Buchanan acts as if it’s a threat to her power.

    • Strong leaders tap into employee’s motivations and passions, Buchanan’s negative emotional IQ prevents her from knowing even where to start.

    • Strong leaders don’t need to prove their boss, Buchanan seizes every opportunity.

    • Strong leaders motivate others through winning visions, Buchanan motivates through fear, visions of loss – as in people’s job.

    • Strong leaders surround themselves with managers who can also “manage up,” Buchanan seeks just top down.

Unfortunately, DNA like hers runs deep through Gannett, key to why it struggles so much today.

  22. Jim: I am strongly interested in reading more information on any age discrimination lawsuits. I hope you look into this by making it a top priority.

Based on the way I've seen 40-plusers treated, I expect this to be Gannett's Achilles Heel.

  23. I am interested to learn more about this age discrimination suit. How do I find out more and remain anonymous.

  24. 6:36 - If you think you have a valid claim, you need to contact an attorney. I do think there are enough people that a class action suit can be filed. It is so blatantly obvious from the layoffs on down to the buyouts and re-orgs that the older higher paid employees are being targeted and replaced by younger less expensive employees to do the same jobs.

  25. 11:06 - I think the age discrimination lawsuit can start with the employees who are 40 and up.

  26. Michael Kane made a visit to Wilmington this week along with his controller Don Lemire. Numbers must not be good. Why else would they visit.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Correct.
    40 and up.

And 7:35pm, that is exactly what I have seen happen at my former paper. College kids are now doing my former job. At a fraction of what I was paid, and without benefits, of course.

  29. Buchanan did not hire Washburn. Get your facts straight.

  30. Lay off (pun intended) of CW and MB. Look at the wonderful "exclusive" journalism they are now producing ... and it's so great that they're letting readers know by slapping "Enquirer Exclusive" on every other story. Have to with all that competition, you know. Can you say "Trying too hard?" That's the not-so-exclusive story of CW's first year+ in Cinci. ... And how 'bout the hiring coup CW pulled off by bringing in the Dynamic Married Duo of Trujillo and Feherty. Perfect timing to create jobs for Mr. and Mrs. Ego @ such a time as this, eh? Maybe we'll save how "The Storyteller" Mr. Trujillo has endeared himself to the newsroom for another day. Maybe another day we can talk about him blowing off the mandatory once-a-month weekend g.a. shift or the "There are no mistakes in this story" message he sent the copy desk attached with a story that, you guessed it, had mistakes in it.

  31. Are there any truths to the upcoming layoffs for GPS!

  32. The GPS side of Florida Today is ran by a very compassionet, knowledgeable, and genuine good person. He has truly done an excellent job maintaining the quality of the printed product and the atmosphere in the press room. Pete sure has done his home work in regards to Mr.Campbell.

  33. Did you support Clinton’s definition of what is is too 10:19? LOL.

Fact is, Washburn worked for Buchanan before and while many were guessing who was going to replace Callinan, those in the know knew she was Buchanan’s choice well before her hire.

Extending what you seem to want to play here appears to suggest that Buchanan is helpless in controlling Washburn. She’s not and she clearly owns what’s taking place in the Enquirer’s newsroom too.

  34. Kane and Lemire see the once productive Wilmington site is going down too............maybe they broke out a nice pep-talk

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
