ReplyDeletedigital won't need copy editors - fixes can be made 24/7. nothing is ever final like it is in print. and soon digital will just use text speak anyway. u all know that's the truth. lol.
ReplyDeleteThe "photo artist" is (well,..was) their scanner who bailed out a lot of bad photography. And yes, they like graphic artists are an ancient and endangered species, nearly extinct are these gentle giants of photography. Anyone know, does cobra cover a gannettectomy. ?

11:06 - Copy editors, untouchable? Gannett took ours 2 years ago. That's when I realized how dumb they were - no copy editor for a newspaper? What the hell?
ReplyDeleteEntire desk of them at USAT making plenty because they've been around for decades. These are the people who should be replaced with newbies instead of reporters. They are uninspird, bitter clock watchers.

ReplyDeleteWhat a company! If you don't work here, stay clear of the place. It's probably the worst company I've ever worked for in 35 years. If you do work here, hold on best you can and get out as soon as you can. This is not a place where one can ever feel secure, especially if you're over 50.
ReplyDeleteHaving a graphic artist on staff was a luxury that Gannett papers do not have anymore. Now they get by with wire graphics, stock art and most of the staff paginators can do basic local news graphics.

ReplyDeleteCopy desk chief was actually the operations department manager whose staff included copy editors, designers, copy chiefs and the entire editorial side of the web operation. Photo artist, as posted above, was a talented scanner with lightning speed. Artists both brought unique capabilities to the table, from web production to clever illustrations. GGM publishes six weekly tabs and four monthly magazines, and has 11 websites. I believe this "reorganization" brings the art department down to one artist, with the exception of management.
ReplyDelete@9:03 Those "uninspird" copy editors are the only ones who keep you and the rest of the semi-illiterate children from the awesome Gannett Talent Development Program from humiliating USAT even more than you already do on a daily basis.

ReplyDeleteI happen to know that one of the layoffs last week from GGM was a very loyal, hard working employee of 21 years, who was over 56. GGM could have been decent enough to offer that person a buyout, but instead laid them off a few days before the buyout was announced in this blog. Talk about adding "insult to injury".

ReplyDeleteThat comment makes me giggle. I never revel in others' misfortune, but as Sun Tzu said, "Wait by the river long enough and the bodies of your enemies will float past." Working at GGM (Had to abandon that old-school Army Times Publishing Co. name recognition, right?) There was a manager there who caused every male member of the desk to exhibit stress symptoms requiring doctors' visits. Lamenting the loss of a "scanner?" Who even knows what a "scanner" is? Any decent photog can download his card and do corrections in photoshop. Working for GGM was like keeping a a grizzly bear or 15-foot ball python as a pet -- you never knew when you were going to get it.
If you a have a 15-foot ball python, you should notify the scientific community. Ball Pythons only grow between 4-5ft.
Delete
