  1. To those agonizing over health insurance should they accept the buyout, check out what is coming with Obamacare. All the states already have high risk insurance pools with affordable rates and if you are over 56, believe me, you are a high risk and would have no trouble qualifying. More provisions kick in in 2013 and, by 2014 everyone will be eligible for subsidized health insurance.

  2. Don't count on tax payer funded/ subsidized ObamaCare it will be repealed!

  3. Here's a hoot: Cincinnati Enquirer today has "20 Women to Watch in 2012" - which includes their editor, Carolyn Washburn. Her writeup is a nice little bit of self-promotion for the paper: "Carolyn Washburn leads the region's largest news-gathering organization as it expands its print, digital and mobile reach, including introduction this fall of a new, more compact Enquirer. Her goal: More investigations, watchdog reports, storytelling, community leadership, reader engagement. Besides The Enquirer, Washburn oversees content of Cincinnati.com, 238 community web sites, a growing mobile business, a social network operation and 26 community newspapers."

  5. ….and there’s even more in today’s Enquirer as it revealed “Enquirer Media has donated $5.4 million to the UC campaign since 2006, nearly all of it through marketing services for the GEARUP college readiness program. Enquirer President and Publisher Margaret Buchanan is one of nine UC trustees.”

What was the net cost to Gannett for its “donations” (and Buchanan's seat) and how many jobs could it have saved if it contributed less?

  6. Yeah ,the ecomomy is just great!
Just ask the millions who are unemployed how great the ecomomy is.
As well as how many new unemployed Gannett people.
    Yeah just great!
Oh brother, dems are so blind to reality.

  7. The Enquirer promos it's own editor. Egotastic!

  8. 10:37 and 11:25 That's odd. What does this say about her boss, Publisher Margaret Buchanan?

  9. What does it say about the people who work for Washburn and the sycophantic culture she's created there?

  10. Including Washburn for no other reason than it can, and a few others (a bar owner?), all while excluding top female professionals from GE, Kroger, UC, Fifth Third, P&G, Macy’s, TQL, etc. is further proof why the Enquirer continues to be increasingly less relevant within Cincinnati and notably within the business community.

  11. Someone at the Arizona Republic needs an imagination. On the 10th anniversary of 9-11 they did a "tell us what 9-11 means to you in six words." thing. Okay, a blatant rip off of Hemingway but a little different. This weekend is Arizona's centennial. The front page? Tell us what Arizona will be like in 100 years, but do it in exactly six words. After ripping off Hemingway, they're now ripping off themselves.

  12. If you're going to steal someone's baby shoes, you might as well steal from the best . . .

Happy 100th, Arizona! I've been here for 20 of 'em . . . the best 20 of my life.

BTW . . . it was 80 here yesterday. The only thing keeping us from being overcrowded is those pesky 120-degree days in July.

  13. Someone commented here the other day about why it took so long for Appleton to update their story on Obama and the birth control issue. I'm guessing the FOUR digital guys on that day were busy with more important things, like watching a high school basketball game on the Web.

Six words that describe the worst in Gannett - they work in the executive suite

  15. This woman is now ready for the big time. As John Hillkirk's successor at USA Today.

  16. Jim, are you hearing anything on GPS? There are alot of us out there needing information too.

  17. Yes, 2:20, the digiguys were watching a h.s. basketball game at 1pm Friday afternoon.

  19. 10:37 a.m.: The Enquirer seriously did that? That's appalling. I take a shower every day, but working for this company, I still feel filthy.

  20. This is embarrasing for the newspaper. This woman has no shame. She's about as much a player in Cinncy as the third string QB for the Bengals.

They should do a follow-up this time next year after The Enquirer has lost half its readership...

  23. Am I crazy for considering rejoining Gannett for a job in one of the design studios?

    ReplyDelete
  24. 8:59 - only you can answer that. It depends on how badly you need a job and whether or not you enjoy being around your future co-workers.

If you want to work in newspapers, it may well be the only game in town.

Since you're "rejoining" Gannett and read this blog, you know what a profoundly fouled up organization Gannett is, so at least you're making an informed decision.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 9:23, I think 8:59's dilemma about "rejoining" Gannett stems from the fact that on the ground there are some really good people.

I know I very much miss some of the folks I worked with, both as professionals and as friends who I had worked with for many years.

And very unofficially an offer of returning was wafted my way in some other mind-numbing capacity, albeit part-time and along the lines of I surely must be a masochist.

I don't blame 'em for that assumption, given how much sheer crap I put up with year in, year out.

But as for 8:59 "being crazy for considering rejoining Gannett for a job in one of the design studios," I'd advise it's kinda like marrying a corpse.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 8:59: Don't do it unless you have to. The transition to the design studios has been awful. So-called 'design' is worse than before. Of course, some of that is because of being overworked and understaffed as papers are added. And some of that staff is unqualified to begin with (ie... someone with really no experience having a family member secure them a job in a studio because of their pull.)
Have you seen some of the designs coming out of the hubs?
Can't wait for Gannett's next bright idea.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 8:59 Time to get out. No long term career.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 8:59 The CCI front end system is a big problem with the hubs and the volume of work really seems unbearable - someone miscalculated on how many pages were going to be designed on deadline. little is done in advance.

  29. As far as GPS stands; We are still trying to figure out who is in charge of what and what will be printed were. It is a work in progress and will be for some time. But once that gets ironed out, expect changes and reductions

  30. 11:07,the economy, along with Gannett and its stock price, started its freefall in the George W. Bush administration. It pretty much remained that way for his full eight years.
And I'm sure our fearless ex-leader Craig Dubow is a rock-ribbed Republican. Under his watch the 401K plan dwindled down to almost nothing, and what was once a good pension plan was also stripped to a fraction of its former worth.
That's why very few people will be able to afford taking the buyout, unless they plan on dying within three years.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
