Shreveport | GCI reaches outside for new publisher

Corporate said today that it hired a Morris Communications executive as the new publisher of The Times at Shreveport, La. Donald W. Bailey replaces Pete Zanmiller, who was named south regional vice president of Gannett Publishing Services in October, when GCI created that new unit.

Bailey was president of Georgia's Augusta Chronicle, and its 13 sister companies in Georgia and South Carolina, a job he held since 2004, according to a statement. He left that job in July, according to his LinkedIn profile.

  1. Interesting -- Alan English, the former Shreveport executive editor, is now the executive editor at the Augusta Chronicle.

  2. What has this guy done between July and this job? Why did he leave the Augusta Chronicle in July?

  3. 12:49 Kind of like a belated prisoner swap, eh?

From a March 2009 Gannett Blog post:

Executive Editor Alan English of Louisiana's Times took the top news executive's job at Georgia's Augusta Chronicle yesterday, three months after publicly bemoaning Christmas layoffs at the Shreveport paper.

  4. This quote in the statement, attributed to Bob Dickey, has some strange phrasing: ""Don is looking forward to being an active part of the community as he and those at The Times work together to serve the changing needs of consumers and businesses."

Shouldn't that have been attributed to Bailey? (Who, by the way, is quoted at all in the statement, an odd omission of its own.)

  5. Now if they could only get rid of
    Robert Campbell!

  6. Dickey doesn't know anything about Shreveport. Best of luck to Mr. Bailey. He has very big shoes to fill.

  8. I thought they sent Barry Newcomb from the Florida Today to Shreveport to assume the roll of Publisher.

    1. Barry Newcomb is a press operator not a publisher.

  9. What does this mean for the current editor of The Times, especially since the former editor, who left to become editor of the Augusta Chronicle, is tight with Donald Bailey and just closed on a house with his wife in Shreveport? I doubt he wants a second home in Shreveport? Is he hoping to return to The Times? Something smells about this entire scenario.

  10. English's wife has been back there teaching for a long time. He's been seen visiting long before changes took place. Connection might mean something, but not sure 1 + 1 = 2.

  11. 3:02 I thought Africa Price, the Times' editor, was acting publisher.

  12. 1:12 & 1:24 Yes I agree, what a joke!
Joke is on employees! Thanks GANNETT!

  13. Africa was acting publisher until they found a replacement for Pete Zanmiller.

  14. So, what happened to AP?
Is she still at the Shreveport rag?

  15. 3:02 That was a great one!!!
Barry Newcomb is over qualified to be publisher-
He is too much of a great person and knows how to treat others respectfully, in short- he appreciates all life has to offer and would be too good for the job.

In other words, he's not that desperate!
Let the no goods have it, like usual!

  16. Who is Robert Campbell and his wife?

  18. Africa Price was acting publisher, but we didn't get an indication that the job was permanent (or that she necessarily wanted that job) She's still the executive editor (and since the layoff of Rod Richardson in 2010 the ME). Very interesting about Alan English and his wife...and yes, odd timing. They closed on the house in mid-December. Makes me wonder if Price is going somewhere soon. She was tapped to climb the corporate ladder during her first round as a topic editor in Shreveport. Meanwhile, we're busily scheduling furloughs and holding our breath over the possible layoffs this month.
