Note: My publishing software is having a hiccup

[Updated at 11:26 p.m. ET] I've changed the form used to post comments to Gannett Blog so that it's now a pop-up. This switch deals with a software update Google's Blogger publishing platform rolled out today without notice.

The update was designed to introduce "threaded comments," which are supposed to make it easier to differentiate between whether someone is making a general comment on the thread, or responding to another comment on the thread.

But it isn't ready for prime time. Many of you noticed the new comment type was too small, too hard to read -- and was in the color green, to boot.

So, I'll check back with Blogger in the near future to see if the threaded comment option is worth a second look.

10 comments:

  1. Well, I suspected that indeed it was an upgrade, allowing us to comment directly to any post here, which could be both good and bad...

Good: Direct replies to a specific post instead of constantly scrolling for the time line.

Bad: Numerous branches off the main thread (much like the front page here), making the task of keeping up with timelines chaotic.

Both have merit. Just depends on which one each of us prefer.

  2. Was Gannett doing the upgrade for them?
    That would explain it.

  3. Sounds like a DPS upgrade.

  4. It is faster, for those of us with a less-than-stellar home connection, but Jim's right, the type size is too small.

  5. I am liking this style, just wish i could like posts.

  6. I wish I could like the posts. But most of them are stupid. Many people here need new material. It's 2012 -- move on to something interesting.

  7. Good God, man. Update your blog theme. This ugly, old theme that's on 1,000s of other Blogger blogs is tiresome to look at.

  8. 10:13 -- expressing the deep thought we can find at blogs everywhere.

As others have said, new material would be great for some here. 10:13 moves to the top of the list.

  9. Note: There are many other Blogger users who are unhappy about the forced change to threaded comments. We've all expressed our views to Blogger administrators over the past 48 hours.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
