In a one-paragraph note today, Executive Editor John Pittman apologized to readers about yesterday's unexplained appearance of an expletive in a story -- a case that generated national headlines:
"In the Thursday edition of The Greenville News, someone added a vulgar word to a wire story inside the Sports section. We are saddened by this and assure everyone that we will deal appropriately with it. We apologize to our readers and the reporter whose name appeared over the story."

A newscaster on CNN this morning mentioned this story, and said they would have a piece on it later, but I didn't have time to wait for it.

ReplyDeleteForget about it. They have no idea who did it and will let this one just disappear. Disfunction all the way from the top down. Pittman spends half his day sitting in his office; the other half talking sports in the managing editor's office. His disconnect with the actual day-to-day running of the newspaper is why the staffers who have left on their own accord got out of there. It's really a shame because if he wasn't there, some would have stayed.
