Fort Myers | Columnist: Sheriff retaliated against me by e-mailing my DUI arrest to 1,600 people

A fascinating read: News-Press columnist Sam Cook and his criminal record; a local sheriff -- and Corporate News Department Vice President Kate Marymont's involvement when she was the Florida paper's top editor.

  1. Interesting facebook comments on this one, too.

  2. This is at least as much a news story as it is a column. Did the paper write one? Is there a citizens commission that investigates possible law-enforcement abuses?

  5. I've known sam cook for 14 years and I hired him as a columnist. That was one of the best decisions of my career. He's rattled cages and got to the truth time after time. I imagine it took sam some time to write that column, baring all for readers. He did the right thing because it eliminated Sheriff Mike Scott's ability to try to blackmail Sam into being quite. I would hope that both Sam and Terry Eberle contact the Florida Department of Law Enforcement because it certainly appears Sheriff Scott could be guilty of a felony. Bribery. Good for you Sam I could not be more proud of you. Give them hell! I also agree with Jim that the News-Press should be doing on a story on this blatent attempt to blackmail a member of the press.

  6. Nice to see the News Press finally showing their true immature colors....Uh, maybe if I write about it, it makes it less of an issue. No different than a child running to tell on the other sibbling before they get in hot water for their own mistake. If Gannett Corporate knew half of the things that go on here, there would be a lot more of this. Great work Sheriff Scott, thanks for catching this loser before he killed someone on the road.

  7. Sheriff scott is just what you want a sheriff to look like and act like. Unfortunately his popularity (he won the last election with 80 percent of the vote) has gone to his head and will cause him to self destruct. Previously he spent his time trying to intimidate the paper's former police reporter. And outstanding young pregnant reporter who is 5' tall and weighs 100 pounds. The paper had a long running feud that executive editor terry eberle called an end to mostly because the sheriff's antics were childish and petty but nevertheless disruptive (refusing to provide daily reports, barring the aforementioned reporter from a press conference, etc.) The paper hasnt really done much more reporting on it because it doesnt really have any reporters anymore only editors and columnists. As much as people like Scott his attitude is of being above the law.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
