Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Has anyone learned anything more about the digital equipment Gannett has supposedly purchased and will allegedly begin distributing to newsrooms? No one at our shop seems to have a clue about what equipment, if anything, we will be getting.
ReplyDelete11:09PM...maybe one of those sites is Florida Today. It's announced that starting Feb. 5 the Sunday edition is going to $3.00 from $1.50. And this while the Orlando Sentinel will be at $2.00. Guess what paper people will buy first? Of course there will still be the die hards but the coupons are what is keeping Sunday sales looking so rosey. Talk about taking a Bowie knife to your own femoral! How is this going to pay for the new equipment 3:58AM is talking about? I hope I'm wrong but this seems worse than any content gutting that's gone on to date.
ReplyDeleteHas the date for the next Gannett shareholders meeting been set?
ReplyDeleteMight be nice to get some carefully selected BNQT pictures printed up to poster size in time for the Q&A (or should I say "T&A") portion of the meeting.
all sites will be raising their sunday and daily SCS and home delivery 40%+ in 2012 as part of a paywall program being rolled out. on-line and print will be sold as a package.
ReplyDeletehave faith you over 55 group, early retirement package offer comming soon to a paper near you !
ReplyDeleteU don't have to be 55 for the "early retirement package."
ReplyDeleteLots of people much younger than that have been laid off so Gracia and Co. can keep their bonuses.
10:02 The annual meeting is scheduled for May 1.
ReplyDeleteSoni will ask again. After writing his infamous column slamming Gannett where did Frank Dileo get a new job. Many people said the former digital guy was going to hire him. Anyone know?
ReplyDelete2:04 I do not know DiLeo's employment status.
ReplyDeleteI just can't stop myself.
ReplyDeleteThis is the lead graph of a story on Cherry Hill's web site today:
A 62-year-old Mercerville man was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 295 in Hamilton Township on Wednesday evening during a bazaar chain of events.
Reporter can't spell and no one edits.
How bizarre.
No, wait, that's typical of Gannett's hire-cheap policy.
But an excellent example of a clothesline lead. They used to be hard to find when newspapers were edited.
ReplyDelete- Former editing professor before I became a Gannett bioche
jim
ReplyDeleteWhen does the 2.6 billion dollar debt become a promblem?
And you don't KNOW that there was not a collection of vendors selling wares along I-295 thus creating a bazaar....
ReplyDeleteWell 4:21, if that were the case, that would be a bizarre bazaar.
ReplyDeleteAnd the ex-prof, now Gannett bioche, makes an excellent point.
The Florida Today is the best newspaper on the Space Coast plain and simple.
ReplyDelete4:48 I think it's the only one.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't say much, sorry!
4:21 Barring a big change in the economy, etc., no time soon. There's $800 million in debt maturing in April. But in the last earnings conference call Martore said analysts:
ReplyDelete"The great thing about being at Gannett is that we generate an enormous amount of free cash flow, but we also have a substantial revolving credit facility in place. So we will use a combination of some of our free cash flow, as well as the significant capacity we have under our revolving credit agreements to re-fund those maturities. We have no maturities coming due in 2013, so we'll be paying down the revolver yet again, depending on what we do obviously with acquisitions and share repurchases and the like."
Yeah, revolving credit has wrecked many an company and individual. What bs-doublespeak.
ReplyDeleteGet your pension when you can, when a company goes bankrupt it could go down too!
ReplyDeleteDear 4:45 -
ReplyDeleteActually, I became an ex-Gannett bioche in 2011 : )
Florida Today is the best newspaper in Central Brevard. I dare anyone to show me a better newspaper published from the area.
ReplyDeleteJim I think it is impirtant to find out about DiLeo. When he left many folks beat their drums and proclaimed him a role model. I would like to know if it turned out to be a smart financial move. It's one thing to get your pound of flesh. It's another to shoot your career in the head and become a commodity no one wants to touch.
ReplyDeleteMajor shout out to the DES Moines Register newsroom. I love their Caucus site and their folks are all over the national news tv cable channels.
ReplyDelete5:24 I think you need to read what 4:24 posted.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to hold more water. Just think,
you are it's biggest cheerleader.
What a joke!!!
HA HA HA!!!!!!
my bad read 4:54---in brief FT sucks!!

You just need to do your selves and family the favor. Now get off the couch put your smart phones down and get your lifes back in order.
ReplyDeleteand so it begins. Newsday poached a rising star from The Journal News for its digital push into Westchester.
ReplyDeletedebt will be solved when all owned buildings will be sold to raise cash and then leased backed. expenses will be the same or lower while pocket full of cash. just ask the consultants hired at corporate, and how much are the consultants charging??
ReplyDeleteAnd whom might that be 8:23?
ReplyDelete8:23 recently retired ( i'm free)
ReplyDelete7:25 Your so smart - I am actually a person that lives and works for Brevard County. You on the other hand are very commical. Keep standing up for your newspaper someone has to. Oh and don't forget, the Brevard workforce will be there for you soon! Your very laughable if not sad!
ReplyDeletethe consultants are Deloitte & Touche
ReplyDelete8:58 So you continue to struggle with life after Big G. You spend a lot of time on this blog with so little to offer but yet continue to log in every half hour. I'm sure the county has an employee assistance program. You should contact your HR dept. SOON!
ReplyDeleteClarify: I thought pensions are guaranteed. Not their continuation, or even the level of monthly payment -- but any monies already there, the balance is guaranteed. Not so? Really, I don't know so I'm askin'.
ReplyDeleteI wish people would stop insulting one another.
ReplyDelete9:35, if you want to know who to blame, just look at the photo in the right rail.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what has happened to JJ Cookes column in the Home News and Courier News?
