BNQT | She's got your 'valued asset' right here

BNQT's "Would You?" series asks the USA Today action sports site's readers whether they'd have sex with women featured in photo slide shows.

One recent edition stars a professional snowboarder, Linn Haugh, whose fuck-you pose creates another dicey juxtaposition with Corporate's mandated "A Gannett Company'' brand identity. As always, the tag line is embedded in BNQT's logo in the upper left corner of every page. (Arrow, above; detail, left.)

You'll recall that another BNQT photo spread disappeared last month after I flagged it. Corporate, it seemed, didn't like seeing tits-and-ass proximate to the company's name.

When Corporate's then-top publicist Robin Pence introduced the tag line requirement last March, she told employees: "Gannett's brand is a valued asset and our visual identity is a critical part of our overall image and a key part of how people perceive us."

So, what do you think about this one, Maryam Banikarim?

  1. Not our best moment even if you grade on curve. Maybe we're trying to be more "edgy" so we appeal to younger demographics.

  2. If only she had an OccupyGannett T-shirt on ... perfect!

  3. This is just so odd... Gannett is all about control. Why can't they put a finger on this?

    Ooooh! Sorry for the pun.

  5. What s bunch of old farts. It is a site that appeals to hot blooded young men. It's not for you grandpa Jim and your other two pals. Hell I am in my 50's, it's not for me either but hell people it wasn't for us before we bought the company and it sure as hell isn't now. Jim you live in the freakin Castro for heavens sake. When did you become a prude. If we buy Playboy are you going to put band aids on the naughty bits?

  6. Personally, I don't care. But someone at Corporate did during the last go-around.

As I wrote before, the situation illustrates the challenges for a G-rated media company when it absorbs one publishing non-G material.

  7. The answer's quite simple. Yes I would!

  8. The feature is so sloppy on so many levels. Even her name is spelled wrong. It's Linn Haug. Some of the other photos are borderline pornography. I hope she's over 18 in every picture. Totally disgusting. Come on, Gannett. What a joke. Are there no standards?

  9. Yes, I would. Frequently and with gusto.

  10. how about some guy tits and ass for us hot young blooded women?

  11. The saddest part of this -- other than the fact that her name is misspelled -- is that if you google "Linn Haugh," the top three results are "BNQT.com - Photo Gallery > Linn Haugh: Would You?"

Maybe they should put Gracia up there and see what the response is like?

  13. well i for one would not want anything this company does to make money. it would be so much better if each and every product failed, don't you think. then everyone could be out of work. just sayin.

  14. Apparently the content police at Gannett don't know what the infantile bozos at BNQT are doing, thereby allowing content you would not dare show your grandma.

How utterly disgusting and how totally irresponsible of Gannett to allow this denigration of women to continue. With gestures, its okay to say FUCK YOU in Gannett publications. Really?

This needs to go viral, friends. Embarrass Gannett, bring these pictures to the next Shareholders Meeting and ask whether this is what Gannett meant when they talk about "Digital" initiatives. (yeah, my MIDDLE digit!)

Gannett is in the ditch and out of fuel.

  15. Yea, that's it. Bring it to the shareholders meeting. Picket. Laugh at your jokes. Is there anyone who thinks that making money is wrong, I mean, except for the whiners who consistently complain about anything new and different. I for one wish we were more cutting edge. Especially in non-mainstream products. I mean, that's why they are non mainstream.

I find it especially amusing that people who complain about "corporate decisions" then complained and say "corporate should do something about it". Which is it?

  16. It would be nice if they copy edited their sexist posts. The young lady's name is spelled Haugh and Haug. Pretty bush league for the nation's leading media company.

  17. What's sad is that this is the level of "content" on the skateboard site that GCI purchased, then made its owners top executives of the entire Gannett corporation. Gannett is now allowing these BNQT geniuses to lard the executive ranks with their own hires and move out/lay off existing employees to make room.

Gannett is investing in this kind of content, and its creators, while slashing its news product and journalists.

This is the product, such as it is, of the people that have landed top management jobs with huge salaries under Mr. Dubow and now Ms. Martore.

Credit to you, Jim, for being a watchdog on this outfit.

  20. Lighten up. Gannett needs to be more like AOL, TimeWarner, News Corp, and less like Gannett. Next you guys will want them to use the same web design as all the other Gannett sites.

This is a step in the right direction. If you're offended, then don't look at it.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
