  4. I'll second 4:51. Don't let the mess ruin the holiday. Gannett's priorities are good at doing that, impacting every aspect of one's life even at home -- the ultimate insult. The insomnia, the high blood pressure, the crushing stress. I say screw 'em. It's Thanksgiving. Everyone have a good one.

  5. Oddly enough, 5:18, some still live in the reality with you where a jolly elf brings presents to good children on the anniversary of God's son's birth.

For the rest of us who actually work in a journalism-related business where it seems people are required to lie to us, forgive us the little peccadillo of just possibly questioning the veracity of an anonymous source.

Some of us have been very happy to lead this pathetic and sad existence and challenge wild claims with the mildest of exhortations:

    "Prove it!"

  6. Thanks 5:28, but don't forget that some of us "get" to work the holiday. I sure won't be having a "good one."

  7. 6:35, 5:48 here. Yeah, it's different at different sites. For many, many years I worked the holidays. Then they said, nope, we'll work you until you drop the day before, and the day after just for good measure -- and you'll lose the overtime of those shifts because we're sending you home for the holiday. No exceptions. Nonetheless, try to keep their negative crap at bay.

  8. Question for Jim: Have you heard any word of layoffs next week from any of your sources? Or is it just rumors floating around here?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Jim, please remove the racist 4:46pm comments, its not funny or relevant.

  10. Congrats Maryam on the Fastcompany article! The media world is starting to notice! Sorry haters but positive change is here. Try it you may actually like it. Now hammer away. I know I'm stupid and must be a paid poster.

  11. 8:48 Which Fast Company article is that? The only one I can find is from about four years ago.

  12. Wow, maybe MB can work that magic at Gannett. If she keeps trusting her gut! Notebooks! Moleskine! For everybody!

    Mims is awesome!

  13. 11:52 My initial reaction to that Fast Company story: Banikarim (or her personal publicist) is doing a good job of getting favorable press coverage for herself -- and, in this case, NBC (sort of).

But you'll notice the Fast Company story says absolutely nothing about her current employer: Gannett.

Banikarim has now been chief marketing officer for eight months. At some point soon, she'll need to start raising GCI's profile at least as much as her own.

Finally, Banikarim told Fast Company: "People told me the project wouldn't get approved, that it was way too esoteric. But it was a huge hit."

Did Fast Company check with NBC to see if, indeed, it was a huge hit -- or is the magazine just serving as her stenographer?

  15. 7:51 From one source -- and only one source -- I have heard layoffs are planned at some U.S. community papers in January.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Heh Jim wouldn't it have been considerate to post this Friday morning after Thanksgiving? Kind of insensitive

    ReplyDelete
  17. As I recall, when the last round of layoffs came about,no one at Gannett sent up warning lights to announce them.
In fact, I think a poster suggested keep a chart as the layoff information trickled in.
So,Jim,the fact that you are not aware of leaked information means absolutely zero.

  18. Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your family, the blessings in your life, and think about where you want to be by next Thanksgiving. Choose to be Gannett Free, its healthy and what we were meant to be.

  19. To the list of possible layoffs in January add the reorg at the Arizona Republic. Managers are being very cagey about what's going to happen, but word is that it will be a complete reorganization of the newsroom to better integrate the print side with the TV side. It will include some job eliminations.

  20. It's been ages since anyone gave me even "a meaningless tchotchke" at Gannett, to say nothing of meaningful rewards. Why is that, MB?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 9:40 In fact, there were several advance warnings here before the big June layoff.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 8:20 I understand your concerns about the timing of my response, but the poster's question was on a subject of considerable urgency: the possibility of layoffs in December or later.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am thankful I no longer work at Gannett. Sorry for those who still do. Hang in there and keep sending those resumes out. Something will break soon!

    ReplyDelete
  24. So waiting until tomorrow would have impacted folks how? Come on Jim posting it today was just plain insensitive. It's freaking Thanksgiving for heavens sake. Can't wait to see your Christ
As good tidings. Come on man employ some common sense

  25. 1:09 your remaining colleagues are glad you are gone as well. Happy Thanksgiving

    ReplyDelete
  26. 2:10 you're next!

    ReplyDelete
  27. 8:32 why is it ok for your pal to disparage the company I work for but I post a comeback and you feel justified to threaten me? Is this a one opinion only blog, yours?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Great comeback, 2:10. I doubt 1:09 is missed by anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1:09, I have many friends still there - they are all trying to get out. You should too.

  30. Were I work, the Publisher is only in charge of Advertising, and Editorial. The rest off the so called paper is know in the new Publishing unit. I don't think he has much to do any more. He should be let go, along with the 3 editors that do nothing,,, just a thought. They know who their are and I bet they will be gone in Jan,12

  31. At USA today, the plan is to protect the old guard at the top and replace all
The good people forced out with kids barely out of college. So you have out of touch managers leading not ready for primetime players. At least these youngsters don't question silly proclamations and assignments. And tweet!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jim, what is MB's agenda? Is it burnishing her own image, and that movers and shakers will be so impressed they seek out marketing deals with Gannett
Does she want better optics for a high-level cable job?

Or has she just been unable to do the job she was hired for and they don't know do to with her?

Must be frustrating for a lot of people who have to deal with her.y Usatodayt counterparts are even more useless. C.p

    ReplyDelete
  33. 12:08 I assume her agenda remains the same: To uncover new revenue sources for Gannett.

She's been on the job nearly nine months. CEO Gracia Martore has the final say on Banikarim's performance so far.

    ReplyDelete
  34. WTF?! 8:20 a.m., since when are journalists sensitive? Tell it like it is, when you know it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. To the folks questioning the sensitivity of discussing layoffs on Thanksgiving: If you are off for the day, why are you looking to Gannettblog? If you are working, for that matter, why are you here?

It's for information, true or false, rumor or substantiated. The theme of the blog is news about Gannett and for the last few years, that news has been, unfortunately, more negative than positive.

Readers have to go through several deliberate steps to get to see Gannettblog content, and then comments. If they felt that they would be emotionally hurt by seeing what they already expect, they had every opportunity to avoid reading it here.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Not buying it 7:50. It was wry g to post on Thanksgiving. You are the same guy that complains that Gannett informs employees of bad news in December. It could have waited until today.

    ReplyDelete

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
