ReplyDeleteGracia needs to guard against surrounding herself with people who only agree with her. Agitators bring about innovation and positive change.
ReplyDelete1:33- I toally agree, but this company has never and will never be innovative.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you people think Gracia will be any different than CB? It is all about he money, look at her salary and her golden parachute, not much different..right! She had a direct hand in the 20,000 layoffs, and she no doubt cut more. still waiting on the 1% cut by the end of the year in the BPS unit, that amounts to at least 100 employees. Pa cuts for her or the company yes men..0%. They are going to milk this company dry, she has no great plans to ramp up Gannett and improve work conditions, iif you think that, your not in the real world. I am looking for a new job, and would be willing to take a pay hit just to get out. Working for these low life's is no fun anymore, going to work sucks on a daily basis, and for me I used to love my job, now I am just a number who collects a pay check. When I walk out the door after my shift , I could care less if the dam building burned to the ground.
ReplyDeleteMeant GPS unit (Gannett Production Services), sorry for the bad spelling, its early:)
ReplyDeleteApparently there are many Gannett employees who still believe that they have a future with Gannett. They still beieve their jobs are safe until they are ready to retire. These last posts seem to indicate that have some faith and suddenly the corporation will change direction and they can,for the first time in years, feel like today won't be their last day of employment.Yeah right.Get over it !
ReplyDeleteAm amazed how many brainwashed people out there believe GCI will change for the better under Martore's new leadership. Agree with 7:52 and 9:10am. Folks, get over it, and stop dreaming that you'll be there till retirement; those days are over, even if you have a few more years to go. She's a wolf in sheep's clothing and doesn't give a damn about your well being or tenure.
ReplyDeleteRe: 10/14/2011 9:33 PM. What's wrong with Margaret Buchanan sending someone out to get her bananas. Julie Engebrecht has to justify her job in some way. Then, again, it probably wasn't Julie because she can't be decisive. She'd have to form a committee, assess whether to shop at Kroger or biggs, then the committee would have to decide on Chiquita or Dole bananas. At that point, she'd assign someone to Tweet the news and put up a facebook posting. Finally, she have to run her plan up to the 20th floor to get Buchanan's approval.
ReplyDeleteThis company is not going to get better under Martore. She's the "brains" (sarcasm alert) behind the layoffs and forced restructuring in places like Westchester and Florida Today. I'm not sure how anyone can think she's going to be responsive to employees. She will respond to one thing: enriching herself.
ReplyDeleteJim, why don't you incorporate the "like" button for posts? LOL
ReplyDeleteThe Palm Beach Post, a Cox Media paper in Palm Beach, FL, laid off 20 people yesterday.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.gossipextra.com/2011/10/14/palm-beach-post-20-workers-laid-off/
The time to take a stand and make a difference is now, people.
ReplyDeleteWhat’s wrong with it 10:03 AM?
ReplyDeleteIn case you haven’t been paying attention, the Enquirer’s resources to accomplish its goals have shrunken greatly (ex: hundreds of people have been fired and tens of thousands of man-hours have been lost through furloughs) and yet Buchanan still sees fit in directing what’s left to fulfill all of her personal needs.
Unfortunately, Buchanan’s the poster child for what’s wrong with Gannett and she’s been that for a very long time.
If Martore doesn’t why she should ask as there’s a wealth of reputable employees and professionals who can easily explain why as it goes well beyond using employees for personal errands and services.
Garcia, pay attention!!! Prior to the marked opening 10/17/11 inform Wall Street that you will be working for $1.00 for the next 2 years. You will also change the pay for the board of directors as well as top excutives across Gannett. This will do two things: 1) give Wall Street some thing positive to talk about no matter what the 3rd quarter figures are. 2) give your fellow workers what they are looking for. A true change that points to sacrifice and leadership.
ReplyDelete1:04am, the car washing and free lunch crap (and more) is going on in Crystal Palace, Martore included - it won't stop if she's getting these services.
ReplyDelete12:59pm, you've gotta be kidding to think she'll work for nothing. I'd like to see her it back to the laid off employees that she primarily was responsible for cutting or to charities, but I'm living that pipedream too.
ReplyDeleteScripps Newspaper
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone hear anything about Scripps Newspapers?
Unfortunately, in an economy like ours layoffs are necessary. Where Gannett went wrong was giving the corporate execs those egregious bonuses last year. It sent the wrong message to everyone leaving all who were laid off or furloughed with the impression that their careers were sacraficed for the greater good of the corporate exec's pocketbook or wallet, and not the corporation itself. It would be a huge move for Gracia to accept a dollar's pay this year and would go a long way for the employee's psyche, but it ain't gonna happen. It is time to move on!

ReplyDeleteAt my site I know of one director who is about to take a job outside of Gannett, two other directors who are looking, and two sales employees who have one foot out the door. This is Gannett's future.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 9:10 GOOD POST!!!!
ReplyDeleteTRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It must be worthwhile, they used lots of exclamation points.
ReplyDeleteBut now the rest of the internet has none until 12:01 am. For shame.
Last night 10 editorial staffers were laid off at FT due to migration to the design center. They were informed months ago, so they knew it was coming.
ReplyDeleteShame--for what!!!!!!!!! ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWould love for gracia to put some money where her mouth is. Say comp based on stock price appreciation and actual revenue growth. No gain, little for her.
ReplyDeleteHer idea of growth is cut, cut, cut. Too bad is wont be
ReplyDeletefrom management.
Even as a journalist, I like was 7:30 has to say: Sure, Ms. Martone, get paid a bundle: if you grow the company. That means top-line revenues, not phony profit growth generated by another 10,000 layoffs or massive cost cuts. By the way, I know it's harder to get excited about a slogan like "Back to Basics," but some of your newspapers used to be well regarded in their communities and reader loyalty was high. Newspapers with skeleton crews and cub reporters who can't write a coherent sentence don't do so much for that.

ReplyDeleteWith the 3rd qtr financials coming out next week I have some questions for Martore. I wish I knew someone in the financial press I could funnel them to.
ReplyDelete1) How much did it cost to buy Presswire?
2) What are Gannett's plans for PW? How will they incorporate PW into Gannett?
3) Will Gannett stop using other wires and rely on PW or will they use the threat of that to get better deals from AP or Getty?
4) Will Gannett incorporate PW photographers into their staffing structures and reduce the staff photographers they employ?

ReplyDelete10:51 and friends PW was bought to support Buesse's initiative. It has nothing at all to do with newspapers. Stop the whole victim theme.
ReplyDeleteDid y'all ever see Wall-E? That's what's left at Gannett. Trash compactor robots and roaches. Sorry; it's true. Except for a few bean counters at the top (Gracia, Ray) that's it. And there's no happy ending.
ReplyDeleteI flew away awhile ago (not really on my own terms) and now I have to deal with Gannett folks in my new job. And I have to say I am unbelievably embarrassed for people to see what this company is today. Sad. Sad.

ReplyDeleteIts funny to see that people put expect so much out of one person. The place is sinking and your on the boat. That one person cares about herself only. duh!!
ReplyDelete12:12 That may or may not be true, but I think an explanation would be nice. What are their intentions and goals with Presswire? That's all 10:51 was asking. For the last five years, this company has done nothing but fire people and find ways for low cost workers to replace high cost workers. Given that, a dose of skepticism is certainly warranted.
ReplyDeleteI haven't worked for Gannett in 15 years, but I have to agree with those who say that the new CEO, elevated from her position as the previous administration's No. 2, is unlikely to order a drastic change in direction for the company.
ReplyDeleteCould happen, but odds would seem to be against it.

ReplyDeleteGood on you for deleting, but you missed 10:14 p.m.
ReplyDelete11:34 Why would the company share anything about Beusse's project. You guys fight one another to see who can post confidential information on this blog. Never going to happen. Plenty of examples of competitive info posted here. You can't have it both ways kids.
ReplyDelete11:34 John with all due respect you are wrong. She wants to step out of his negative shadow. Big changes coming. Jim you should start tracking them. Start with the Blue Ball!
ReplyDelete4:23 What happened to Ellwood's pledge to be more transparent?

Gossip is the last refuge of people who have no life. JDS
ReplyDelete4:36 Jim, Beusse reports to Hunke not Ellwood.
ReplyDeleteJH: Thought you were not going to allow abuse of folks below the OC level? You've got a regular anonymous ranter who's carrying a grudge against a particular editor. You continue to allow this ranter to spew unsubstantiated nastiness unchecked. Pay more attention.
ReplyDeleteJim, you're not going to get many responses while you're wearing the diaper. Just take responsibility for this weekend's mess and move on. It's your fault, no matter what you try to claim.
ReplyDeleteI guess everyone gave up posting in anticipation of the third quarter report.
ReplyDeleteLet the stress multiply once again for 12th time in 3 years.
Let the layoffs begin !
Keep dreamin, maybe it won't be your turn once again.
Keep on staying on and roll the dice.
No one should be felt sorry for. You've all had three years to prepare.
OCCUPY GANNETT !!! The remaining workers should protest for our rights. When will these NO raises, Paycuts, Layoffs and Furloughs stop? When is enough enough Gannett? If you stop these ridiculous million dollar bonuses, maybe you wouldn't have to CUT so much of the remaining workforce! We're working for peanuts while the big bosses live off blood money.

do you know why those employees get bonuses? because they are written in to their contracts- that is the sad truth most of the executives have contracts that have to be honored. And since Gannett is a publicly traded company they are working with the best interest of the shareholders at stake, not the employees. This is the law that they have to do this. So bitching and moaning isn't going to change that- neither is having a bean counter in charge who will surely be loyal only to the numbers.
