Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteAmir: That link has already been posted here a couple of times.
ReplyDeleteDrove by the Newseum the other day, and it has a big blue banner outside saying "Newseum Celebrates Freedom". I guess that's freedom as in Freedom Forum, or feed 'em forum. The Canadian Embassy next door has posted a counter-banner with the logo: "Canada Celebrates 9/11." Somehow, I like the Canadian banner better.
ReplyDeletep.s. But then I'm peculiar.

ReplyDeleteLivingSocial deal today in Milwaukee:
ReplyDeleteUSA TODAY
11-Week Weekday Subscription and a Contribution to the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign
Ten years after September 11, 2001, our memories of that day are filled with mixed emotions -- grief, sorrow, and national pride. We're proud to partner with USA TODAY in honor of America's heroes with the opportunity to donate to the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign, a national effort to commemorate the actions of the passengers who lost their lives on 9/11. When you pay just $15, you can have the paper delivered to your home or office each weekday for 11 weeks (a $41 value). More importantly, as you gain insight on domestic and international news, you'll also be giving back: With each subscription, USA TODAY will make a $5 donation to the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign. Stay current anywhere with the paper's e-Edition, which includes a Saturday weekend extra. Increased awareness paired with a good cause? That's a smart path to a noble purpose.
Who put the wrong barcode on today's USA Today? We have an edition with more ads than we have seen for years, but it won't scan anywhere for purchase.
ReplyDeleteBuck up campers! The turn around is coming. I saw this in the Onion (America's Finest News Source): http://www.theonion.com/articles/failing-us-economy-no-reason-at-all-to-stop-invest,21251/
ReplyDelete10:49 - that's a hotel edition, I hear nobody has to pay for those so just walk out with it.

ReplyDeleteGiven the new (cyclic) economic outlook, vomit buckets are being delivered to all USCP publishers.
ReplyDeleteHow badly will the effects of flooding, evacuations and road closures in greater Binghamton affect its numbers for the month? Single copy sales and home delivery today alone must be down a great deal.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know when the page pagination hubs go live?
ReplyDeleteUh-oh. Gannett shares are down 7.4 percent today, as of about 3:20. The market is down only 1 percent. Anyone know what's going on? Is Dubow dumping shares? Someone's selling.
ReplyDelete2:57, the design studio timelines are staggered. For instance, among Midwestern newspapers, Des Moines already is being done at the studio, Sioux Falls starts there soon, and then St. Cloud is next in line. As far as I can tell, the goal still is to have all the sites being done at the various design studios by the end of 2012. So it's just a matter of where your site falls on that timeline.
ReplyDelete3:26 Gannett's stock closed today at $9.87 a share, down 68 cents, or 6.5%, on a day when the S&P 500 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both fell about 1%.
ReplyDeleteAmong major newspaper publishers, GCI's performance tied with Lee Enterprises for biggest percentage decline.
Speaking of 10:02, Jim, it's time to keep an ear to the ground on The Freedom Forum and Newseum. Lots of ex-employees keep hearing that the new guy is going to shake things up and clear away some of the pricey hangers-on. Newseum visits are up, but not revenue because they have so many "kids get in free" and other offers. And keeping offices and big salaries in Nashville and SoDak make no sense when all that matters to survival is the Newseum. They will get a bump in 2012 on party space rentals by politicos and selling space to TV networks, but will it be enough?

ReplyDeleteSo if the Des Moines pagination is now being done by a design studio ,does that not mean that there were layoffs in their own pagination staff?
ReplyDeleteNothing has been reported here, but then again the Iowa staffers have been largely quiet throughout the entire chaos that has been happening. No balls ,I guess.
Great dig at the Des Moines people, 9:38. What a class act you are.
ReplyDelete9:54... Seriously? It's Des Moines! Didn't you see that episode of South Park?
ReplyDeleteWhen will the Ashbury Park page design hub begin?
ReplyDeleteHow has the new process been going in Des Monines?

Asbury Park's already begun. Five of the six NJ papers are paginated there now.
ReplyDeleteThe Wilmington paper's niche products and page designs are supposed to go to Asbury Park but no one has heard a time line as to when. Anyone have a clue?

Why is corporate visiting all the sites? And why is everyone jumping through hoops for them? It is so ridiculous. The money and man power spent on these visits could be better utilized by paying their employees who are the ones who actually get things done!
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if we had an actual document that showed the timeline for each paper for the design hubs similar to what we had when the ad design was being sent to separate hubs.
