Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDelete8:38 If you want to continue that discussion, please do so in the original thread. It's too confusing to continue it here, without all the background.
ReplyDeleteWhat's going on with truck drivers at some sites,
ReplyDeletewhere and why?
I'm a former TJN employee who knows some Hearst execs socially. They own four of the five dailies in neighboring Fairfield County, as well as The Albany Times Union. They are salivating at the prospect of locking up affluent Fairfield and Westchester counties. Unlike their Gannett counterparts, they actually know what they are doing. Look for Hearst to aquire TJN by the end of the year, early 2012 at the latest. Then look for further consolidation. RIFs in other words - of TJN senior management in the newsroom and elsewhere.
ReplyDelete1 pm. As always this is conjecture and speculation; there's no publicly available evidence that this is true.
ReplyDeleteJim- 1:00pm stated they socialize with Hearst execs. Pay attention. Not everything gets validated via press releases.

ReplyDeleteYes Jim, except that these Hearst execs speak about it as if it's something that has been discussed by top company brass, who want to pursue it. Have there been conversations with Gannett? I don't know. But it is not simply idle chatter. They believe they can make money, and they like the newsroom talent if not the newsroom leadership. Time will tell.
ReplyDelete1:50 That, at least, is a little more concrete than 1:57's, which I've seen nearly word-for-word already: "The Journal News - Unit 1084 - will be History. Wait and see - Coming Soon."

ReplyDeleteJim have you heard of anymore lay offs for Florida Today besides the newroom in October?
ReplyDelete4:18 No.
ReplyDelete1 and 1:50 are simply throwing crap at the wall. Either cite a source -- not just vague B.S. about socializing with execs -- or go away.
ReplyDeleteWord came down of single copy price increases at the central ohio papers, including most Sunday editions going from $1.25 to $2.

ReplyDelete1:00pm thinks Hearst knows what they are doing? Have you heard of the SFC? Only losing millions of dollars a year!
ReplyDeleteHearst is run by non-family members who will do what it takes to keep the Hearsts rich. San Francisco is a sad shadow of itself and will be dumped to the likes of MediaNews/hedge funde group. The idea of locking up affluent Albany, NY to Fairfield, Conn. might make sense once there are a slew of biz-side and reporting and top editor/publisher layoffs at Journal News and Pok Journal. Stranger things have happened.
ReplyDelete2:17 forgot the Rochester Times-Union (!)

ReplyDeleteMan! I'm going to have to sell my cow to afford my Ohio Gannett Sunday paper!
ReplyDeleteI've been receiving "Healthy Actions!" reminders every month. Finally Gannett drops the other shoe in their latest mailing and threatens a $480 annual surcharge if you don't take their Health Risk Assessment or get a physical by Sept. 30. Why do I get the feeling Gannett doesn't think much of their employees in the trenches?
ReplyDelete4:18...heard supposedly a couple from the mail room/production and a couple maybe from holdovers from USA but they should have already gotten notices. Haven't heard of anyone else.
ReplyDelete"The idea of locking up affluent Albany, NY to Fairfield, Conn. ..."
ReplyDeleteAffluent? Have you ever been to Albany?
