  1. I have to say, props to the staff of the Indy Star for their excellent coverage of yesterday's horrible stage collapse at the state fair. Check out their site if you have a few, they've done well.

  2. Are there any current Gannett employees who are secure in their jobs for the future and feel content about the position they have within Gannett.
I am wondering if all Gannetteers would rather be layed off and get it over with and get on to their future lives or are still holding on to the belief that they do have a future that they can be sure of with Gannett.

  3. @9:22, personally, I am trying to ride out the storm to a point where the economy recovers (stop laughing) and I am able to get another job. Why am I staying at Gannett? It's a job and this is a bad time to be without one in any field.
While I hate to turn my back on the years I've put in, it's clear this company has no future. Anyone who thinks other wise, given the evidence, is fooling themselves.

  4. From Phoenix, my normal Starbucks had 4 Az Republics this morning at 7:15. While I haven't worked at the paper for years, seems like a year ago I was still unstrapping one of the 4-6 bundles that were at this location. I'm sure they're reducing returns by placing so few papers and I'm equally sure reducing readers as well. This is a continuing sad story.

  6. Jim has subsided to the depths of corporate and is now suppressing comments that merely mentions the names Crotchfelt, or Dickey. Looks like Jim is back on Gannett payroll or he is getting compensation in other forms.

  7. Dear 11:55 a.m.:

Gosh, thanks for your concern and sage advice. Where would us stupes be without Aristotles like you to help us? God bless.

    P.S. I am not 11:48 a.m.

    Signed,
    A Grateful Reader

  8. I had hoped to wait until later to post yet another comment about USAToday's superb entertainment coverage, but this takes the cake: Today the paper's Web site posts a story from The Indianapolis Star with video on that awful Indiana State Fair accident, and what leads the video? An ad for ALLSTATE (featuring a man in a suit pounding away in a toilet bowl). I click again -- ANOTHER ad for ALLSTATE (this one featuring a slob eating in the back seat of an SUV). I am supposed to calm myself down by saying that algorithms plant these ads, but anyone who watches television will know of advertisers' willful ignorance. This is a disgrace, and as I said in a comment to the story the GanNETToids and Allstate should be ashamed of themselves.

And here's a screenshot from my own blog.

  9. @9:22 Gannett newsroom reporter here; I've been seriously looking for a new gig since this spring. It's just been tough going because media jobs are scarce, and because I'm generally looking outside newspapers. I'm determined to find a job that not only will I like, but that will compensate me fairly, treat me like a human being and fulfill me professionally. I don't want to get laid off from Gannett (if it happens, it happens), but I cannot and will not stay here in the long-term. I'm gone the moment I find something suitable. Oh, and if it matters, I'm under 30.

  13. In an e-mail, a reader writes:

"Apparently the Detroit Free Press has uncovered documents showing that Fannie Mae has torpedoed homeowners trying to work out loan modifications, forcing them to lose their homes while singing to Congress about how they try to keep homeowners in their houses. This is what journalism should be."

  16. I smell something big--the junior high posters are out tonight. Wonder what'll go down at the T-31 meeting at the mothership this week?

  18. Yeah, the haters are back. That's a sure sign that someone's collecting $20 pop to discredit Jim and the blog. Which, in turn, is a sure sign that some serious crap is coming down from the Blasted Crystal Palace.

  20. OMG...what are those spinal injury ads doing in the Indy Star's photo gallery of that terrible stage collapse...they're interspaced with pix of fairgoers lifting the superstructure off the victims!?! What is going on. Our hearts go out to the victims. But why this blatant advertising??!?

  21. The broken back ads are from "Spinal Aid Centers of America" in Avon, Ind. Heartbreaking, not backbreaking, I'd say,

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
