  1. to 9:35 part 6 re: paid circulation. I believe if they are in an "open rack", either the store "hopes" people will pay for them or they have a deal where they are some kind of bulk drop. Yes they would be considered paid circulation. Of course with the new rules from ABC anything outside of the plant is counted circulation!

Just a side note...I looked at Florida Today's circulation numbers from the link here and I wonder where they came up with those numbers. I'm assuming they are a 3 month average as they were supposed to be Jan. thru March I believe. Those numbers never popped up on the counter coming out of the press...creative accounting I guess.

  3. 4:58 I'm not sure who to say hi too.....Is it Karen or is it Brooke? It is obvious that it is one of the two.

  4. 10:19 am I figured 4:58 and 11:54 were Karen.

  8. From the editor: Anonymity is going away on news-press.com story comments (one of two papers in the company).

  9. I know first hand that when you question the division/corporate strategies and initiatives you are ultimately signing your own pink slip. Corporate does not want leaders in the business units. They want YES men and women. That is why I was ousted as a publisher.

  10. Jim, Why was my comment removed? Explain!

  11. Jim, wow, I can't believe you are removing the 11:01 and 11:15 comment. I seen nothing wrong with those two comments that would warrant taken them down. I am a financial support of this blog but if this the scrutiny that you are putting in place than consider this my final contribution.

  12. Cherry Hill headline today: "Officials: S.J. ringmaster used inside help to steal more than $200K from TD Bank customer accounts"

Ringmaster? Really? Thought a ringmaster ran a circus performance.

S.J. (ring leader). Uh, no. Story says he is from King of Prussia, Pa.

It's what happens when you cut staff to the bone and no on pays attention to (or cares) what is posted online.

    Say Buh-bye to credibility.

  13. Besides Brevard and the 25% cuts in news,
is there any more layoff news?

  14. 11:25 I removed one comment -- the one timestamped 11:01. Here's the text:

11:10 pm I don’t understand. If the Republic has been so successful in developing and executing an audience strategy and other major metros routinely knock on the Phoenix door, then why hasn’t the Republic lead Gannett out of its rapidly increasing state of decline?

I removed the comment posted at 11:15 because it referred to someone as: "A puppet and eye candy for the executives in the division and corporate. She is attractive and uses this as an advantage to move up through the ranks."

That's a bit over the line.

  15. As I post this, The Times in Shreveport, La., appears to have problems with its commenting. None of the stories I checked showed any, even though they were the most popular on the site.

  16. To the person who asked why people stay... it's not because we can't find another job. It's not because we're lazy or too old or like to work 60 hours a week. It's because of one or all of the following: we like our jobs; we like our coworkers; we want to work in journalism because we still think it's important to people and to a democracy and we can still make a difference. Because, quite frankly, many of the people we talk to in all kinds of other jobs are also feeling stressed and overwworked. This is a difficult economy. Things are difficult everywhere; the grass is not necessarily greener elsewhere. I just talked to a former reporter who left to go to work in government. She talked about the total lack of personality in her coworkers, the feeling that everyone is watching her every move, the fact that no one laughs in her office.
If you quit because you're worried about losing your job...well...just about EVERYONE in this country would quit. It's not just tough in media. People aren't just working long hours at newspapers. Talk to anyone in the private sector and see if they don't feel pressure.
And that's a perspective from the Midwest, where the unemployment rate is much better than many areas of the country.

  17. Hunke's grand strategy of building a massive management team has failed badly. If he announces one more managment hire or promotion at his big shindig with staff on thursday, the shit will really hit the fan. People are so disgusted with the regime (heather, rudd, ellwood, etc.etc) that they are completely fed up with broken promises and doublespeaking nonsense.

Oh,Pluck! Similar problem at Cherry Hill

  19. Yeah, sometimes comments (lots of them) are there, the story just doesn't register as having any comments. Other times, entire comments (lots of them, too) disappear without any rhyme or reason, like the softwear resets itself and clears everything out.

  20. There is panic and despair at USA Today. Hunke might very well be booed.

  21. Hunken could be pied like Murdoch. I doubt Crouching Tiger Heather is fast enough to retaliate.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
