  1. S&P downgrades GCI stock to "blasted."

  2. Gannett is Screwed8/06/2011 6:46 AM

Martore's beard must be growing with this stock price! I am sure there are a lot of board members looking at the Martore and Dubiw show as a farce.

    -GCI is at new lows
-Nothing ever came from their big Yahoo partnership and Gannett Local (remember that one!)
-There is a lot of internal fighting across USCP, USAT and Digital and Martore is having the new guy Payne host a "Can't we all get along" meeting to calm the waters in the Crystal Palace
-The Deal Chicken "founders" in AZ Central are upset that Digital is taking the idea and driving it. Mike Coleman is complaining to Dickey and Zidich everyday.
-New head of marketing Maryam has threaten to quit already if they do not provide her with a real budget.
-Jack Williams is waiting to collect hismpension and is quietly dealing with all his defunct investments, including 2 dozen sexual harassment suits within Careerbuilder.

  4. It's funny to hear Maryam threatening to quit. Who else can threaten to do something like that in Gannett?

Average peon: "If you keep treating me this way, I'm going to quit!"

Gannett manager: "Ok lol we'll just replace you with...oh who am I kidding, we won't even replace you, lol"

  5. Just leave Gannett! You have had 3 years to figure out that your job will never again be safe. Those of us who left, wonder why so many are still with Gannett. We write and read the posts saying that there is life after Gannett and how happy we all are to be gone.My sympathies to those still with Gannett.I ,as well as many others, are thriving in our jobs and lives away from Gannett. Can someone please explain to us why you all stay ???
You will say look at the unemployment rate stupid....Not a good enough answer!
You have had 3 years to search. You must be compentent and talented otherwise you would not be with Gannett to begin with.Do you feel like you will be one who remains after the next layoff round and then the next..You are better than everyone at your site and will survive the cuts? You are not expendable? You have no self esteem and believe no other employer would hire you? Just curious here? Not meant to be hurtful.

  6. What a clown 6:46 is. Every element of hist post is a lie and actually not very creative. Dude if you are going to make it up at least make it interesting.

  7. I find it hard to believe that Banikarim would not have known what she was getting herself into and would now threaten to quit.

Gannett has never been known for its belief in marketing. Martore's idea of a marketing budget is running house ads in papers where space didn't sell and on GCI stations in the wee hours, where spots for nothing but home gyms and Ponzi schemes appear. Oh, and the “G A N N E T T” thing with the reach-around tagline.

Banikarim came here because she was between gigs, knew it would be a cakewalk, and thinks she can always leave without a record of success and blame it on tightfisted ol' Gracia. The fact is that she accepted the job cognizant of the culture at GCI and bears responsibility for achieving results with those rules in place.

If she was ignorant of the situation at GCI or truly believed she could get the GMC to think differently, then she is too stupid to hold a position at her current level. If she’s coasting until the next plum opening elsewhere and planning on pinning the stagnation on entrenched company culture, then she’s dishonest. Either way, in the event that the comment by 6:46 is true, it would only serve to reveal that Banikarim is the poser that we feared.

I’d really love to see some brainstorm of hers come in and wash away all the dirt and cobwebs from this company. But I’m not holding my breath.

  8. The problem is we have overpaid executives at every newspaper and if those positions were eliminated then other positions can be saved to grow the products and services. But that is not what Gannett is about. For example, why would a newspaper with 25k net paid circulation have a GM that makes $160k that brings in $2 million of local revenue in a year. That is 8% of the local controllable revenue. Also, local executives often have ideas shoved down from McClean so why need an overpaid executive on site. Hire a local executive that has a vested interest in the community the newspaper serves and pay them a reasonable salary of $100k which would save $60k that could be used for two more reporters.

  9. By the way, I am not from the Information Center. I was a former advertising employee that got tired of the stupid decisions that only deteriorated the product and services that our newspaper was once proud of. Gannett is in Sad shape.

  10. Crotchfelt was pissed that she was under attack on this blog. She has asked IT to review the Browser History of some individuals at the Star to determine if they are posting on this blog from a work computer. Obviously, she thought people were stupid enough to use a work computer to post on this blog. That shows her own stupidity. By the way, I too like to say Crotchfelt and YUM at the same time.

  11. 10:30 you never disappoint. You're the kind of dude that would win the lottery and then bitch about the taxes. Maryam's overall marketing strategy is exceptional but when she is finished implementing you'll bitch that it costs too much or she promoted or hired the wrong person. Thanks for being consistent. Noe reply and camm me a Troll or MB or some other snap. The truth always hurts a Hater

  12. 6:46a is very spot on. I work closely with many on the GMC team and this poster has many of these points depicted very accurately.

We all know Yahoo was a failure. Is there anyone who reads this blog that can defend the success of Yahoo-Gannett?

We all know that the Phoenix team is upset that Sadiv Payne is taking credit for something that was completed before his prior failure Short Tail media was shut down.

Finally, the meeting David Payne is hosting is at the request of Craig Dubow. Mr. Dubow asked Payne to "mediate" the fighting that is occurring across all of the dIfferent Gannett divisions.

I would like any of the "paid corporate posters" to this blog to start providing facts. Start with the following:

    1. Paid Content - Subscription : is it working and if so, what are the numbers?
    2. Yahoo- Mr. Dickey guaranteed over $50 million in new incremental revenue in the first year. Are we there yet?
    3. CMO - Everyone knows she is disappointed with the executive team here as she shares it with her NYC network of friends daily. Why would she stay if her budget was just cut to nearly nothing?
    4. Deal Chicken - we also here about the local print sales reps dropping print page sales for deal chicken local offers. The numbers will prove that out with this quarters revenue numbers from USCP.

There is a lot to be grateful for with Gannett, but not this leadership team. They are all over paid and complain and then just leave us flat out. Chicken shits!

  14. What do we have to show for maryim's tenure? Was Cassidy canned to provide her a budget or just make way for one of her friends? What can we expect besides the minor in house pr/moves that she has initiated? What's the plan?

  18. @4:58, there are ways to be a demanding leader without being a bitch/bastard. I know, I worked for one and he was awesome. You can get results without being hated.

Good luck with that. They're only really good at name-calling. Very one-note, and easy to ignore.

  21. The June 15 Indianapolis Business Journal story about the demise of the Indy Metromix print pub included quotes from Crotchfelt. She referred to a quite a few things The Star had up their sleeve to reach the 25- to 44-year old audience. I’ve been waiting with great anticipation for Crotchfelt to reveal her brilliant strategic hand. Has anything materialized from her sleeve yet? Anyone?

  24. I was in a Discount Tire store (America's Tire Company for you left coaster's) in metro Detroit today and in the waiting area there was a Detroit Free Press rack with a half dozen papers. It was an open oven rack style unit and there was no sign that you had to pay for them so I'm assuming it's for the convenience of the customers. Would these be considered paid circulation?

  25. 5:18 that paid poster crap is so stupid. There are enough of us out here who still enjoy are jobs that no one has to pay us to call you an idiot for posting this crap

Seriously. I wonder about these snipes. People in serious straits mocked like a wide-eyed cat and a a mouse, better than dead, admiration some herald.

What the hell are you corporate types thinking? Slamming the powerless, myself 25 years of that shit, some feign on this ship that is not just sinking but totally betrayed its premise, some notion of jouaralism ever ever meager.

It's just play? Some clique? Some golf?

    Yeh.I'm clueless.

And so are the clients, the advertiser and yer pension. Best counterpoint? That Up There guy making fun of complete stranger.

See. Misspellings, articles of the written, missing! No one gives a flying. This is our media. This how the likes of Dubrow came to the head of this demise.

  32. Heh Craig you're boring. Yeah we know you worked for 25 years and you got no respect. Well there was a reason and it had nothing to do with who was in charge. Anyone who worked with you knows the reason. But them again you've always blamed others for you consistent lack if success. I hope I didn't dumb it down too much. I tried not to use any big words.

  33. "To know how Karen operates, take a look at-http://www.poynter.org/how-tos/digital-strategies/e-media-tidbits/74010/the-power-of-the-newspaper-brand/"

Um, where is the problem in this? It is from 2006 and looks pretty prophetic, especially when you consider how much the media landscape has changed since then.

Might explain why the Republic has been so successful in developing and executing on an audience strategy. Don't believe me, ask other major metros who routinely knock on the Phoenix door.

I think this link has done a really good job of proving just the opposite of what was intended by the author.

  34. 11:10 You're delusional and obviously a member of Gannett management.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @11:30, your powers of debate remind me of a young Clarence Darrow. Actually they don't. Rather than engage in "attacking the man/woman" how about making a logical point rather than waving the white flag so readily.

    From Wikipedia:
"Abusive ad hominem (also called personal abuse or personal attacks) usually involves insulting or belittling one's opponent in order to attack his claim or invalidate his argument, but can also involve pointing out factual but apparent character flaws or actions that are irrelevant to the opponent's argument. This tactic is logically fallacious because insults and negative facts about the opponent's personal character have nothing to do with the logical merits of the opponent's arguments or assertions."

  37. 11:10 pm I don’t understand. If the Republic has been so successful in developing and executing an audience strategy and other major metros routinely knock on the Phoenix door, then why hasn’t the Republic lead Gannett out of its rapidly increasing state of decline?

    ReplyDelete
  38. 11:10, I think you may not be as correct as you think. While the post you question references an article several years old and yes, times have changed, but people don't. Karen Crotchfelt took credit for creating several targeted magazines in Phoenix. She claimed they would create millions in incremental revenue. In reality, they were free publications and the ad revenue was in large part pulled from existing ad contracts with us sales people told to tell the customers these publications were a better fit for their demographics. Unfortunately, with the exception of her little group in Marketing, very few people had any confidence in these little pet projects. She blamed a lot of people for the demise of these publications and a lot of people lost their jobs. And the newspaper lost a lot of ad revenue as the very companies told these were better vehicles were reluctant to return to the paper. Why is this relevant today? Because that's how she and Gannett management works- It's all a big shell game. Great "new ideas" act as a smoke screen to hide the lack of clear vision. And during the process they pat themselves on the back while riding on the backs of expendable employees who actually come in contact with readers, advertisers and retail partners.
