  3. Who of the remaining Gannett employees will be laid off this month.
Oh boy 117,000 new jobs created last month!
That realy takes a bite out of the 20,000,000,
yes ,20 million unemployed.Good luck in rolling the dice now Gannetteers, you should have gotten out 2 years ago or even last year,as compared to economic times ahead. You at least might have had a chance. Those of us who got the pink slip then are already recovered and have regained prosparity.Take the advise from the posters here who say get the hell out !

  4. Mass exodus in the last month in the Phoenix advertising sales area? Any truth to that? Why is it happening?

  5. Another day, another 52-week low: UNDER $11 now at $10.98, OUCH!

  6. Jobs # was cooked, IMHO.
It'll be revised in a week.

  7. The mass exodus in Phoenix started early this year, and just continues. Unfortunately, a LOT of good people have left (not the yes people), and with them left ideas for the future.

  8. From CNN/Money: Are my job skills worthless?
A journalist was one of seven careers profiled: http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2011/news/economy/1107/gallery.job_skills_unemployed/3.html

  9. $10.66

    Battle of Hastings Price.

  10. $10.43 ... based on what is happening to my 401K, my new estimated retirement date is (to borrow from the song) in the year 2525.

  11. Stock price will be a single digit next week.

    FOR GOOD.

  12. Given the direction of the stock price, I feel sorry for Dubow and Martore having to spend their Friday combing through the list of the soon-to-be departed.

  13. Here's a quote from Apple's Steve Jobs, for what it's worth:

"A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallet."

  14. This company would be awesome without all of you whiny bastards.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Decades of hard work (a lot of it off the clock) from us whiny bastards are what drove the stock to $90.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Proper market conditions and no internet drove this company's stock to $90. You were the only game in town, and now your not. What "newspaper" company has stock at 90?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I had Internet access in 1996, not sure about you.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The stock went to 90 after the Internet, Einstein. It was that high in 2004. I had the Internet then, I seem to recall:

  19. The internet was not what it is today in 1996, or 2004. I've had internet access since '91 but it was not the part of everyone's life that it is today. Ignoring this fact just makes you look foolish.

  20. This post below applies to publishers and many editors, too:

These corporate leeches need to know that in personal encounters with employees, they might be greeted with smiles and pleasantries, but beneath the welcoming veneers is nothing but contempt. Dubow and the other leeches might be able to console themselves with money and lives of luxury, but they will never get what they really want, and that is professional respect. This has to nag them because they've seen how demanding CEOs like Jack Welch can win the respect of investors and employees alike. The egos of CEOs is such that they want their tenures to be unmatched, that during their reign revenues and profit rose XXX percent, the payroll grew XX percent, products received widespread accolades and the stock price rose XXX percent. And what will the Dubow Era be remembered for...?

  21. Jeeze, 9:43 a.m. You're a jerk. I too got out of Gannett two years ago (by choice not pink slip) and have started a new career path and am having success. But, I don't come on here and belittle and degrade those employees who are left. It's a tough job market. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Most are probably looking for something new outside of Gannett and will jump when they can.

You don't have to remind them of how bad things are, unless you are doing it more to make yourself feel good at the expense of others.

P.S. It's "advice" not "advise." Idiot.

  22. Jim, according to the 1% job increase. There are apparently 190,000 people that stopped looking for jobs altogether according to some financial polls. Number will be adjusted next week.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1:58, he posts essentially the same thing on every comment thread, and he's usually the first or second post after Jim's lead. Evidently he hadn't gotten a job since getting the pink slip.

9:43, the broken record schtick is getting reaaaaally old. We get it, OK?

  24. Who cares when anyone had internet? This bickering is nuts! If the corporate heads could just starting putting G A N N E T T's quality ahead of everything else, and this is particularly true for its web sites, there might be some hope in all of this. G A N N E T T can't go on with the idea that content doesn't matter!

  25. Has Phoenix lost advertising mgrs. as part of the exodus?

    ReplyDelete
  26. @5:36, yes, more than one.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Really? Who all has left the AZ empire?

    ReplyDelete
  28. As someone that still works for the Republic, Chelle DEVILla (it's really Davilla) is one of the primary reasons!!!! I'm looking for a quick escape just like everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @6:22, won't speak specific names, but it's more than a handful.

    ReplyDelete
  30. At the Az Republic, word is circulation is up and everything is great. That said, I can't find a paper at Starbucks after 7:30 and it's not because they're selling a lot. Local grocery stores are moving newspaper locations due to low demand and even lower draw to avoid returns. Convnient stores are questioning the use of valuable space for lower sales and draw (obviously if the newspaper wants to reduce expenses by reducing draw why would a store invest the space?). Contractors aren't happy with the dramatic decrease in income. Advertisers are confused by the options available and mixed messages the sales people provide. Ad agencies are questioning the circ and hit numbers and everybody's waiting to be fired. There are still some great newspaper people in Phoenix but in answer to 6:22, it's not "Who all has left" it's who all still cares? The paper has done a poor job addressing the needs and concerns of the customers and advertisers by putting the needs and concerns of the paper first and making that approach clear to all.

  31. Maybe they should move Brad Robertson over from Gannett Local....he'll solve all the Az Republic's problems.

  32. hey 1:10, take a long walk off a short pier, but let me chum for some sharks first.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 9:49 Someone hit a nerve? I detect he may have been talking about you.
What happened did you just get some free time because your edition closed?

    ReplyDelete
  34. 8:43...a lot of that started when the control of draws was taken away from the carriers and given to outside sources like almost everything else. They seem to focus on the 7-11's and grocery stores and turn their backs on the rest. Some stores sell out (yes...still!) and complain to the carrier who's only recourse is to pass it on to the DM. Obviously it goes into the either from there.

In our case here...what the heck does Tenn. know about Brevard sales? There is an average but they don't know about any spike for an actual relevent story on the front page or a dip because of an accident or road construction in front of a store.

Our carrier force has the worse morale I've seen in years while the people who know it all go around patting themselves on the back. It's absurd.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 12:40 AM, I agree fully! My local store sells out on Sunday by 8-9am. Plenty of Orlando papers are there and people begin buying them instead of FT. That's the way we increase circulation?

    ReplyDelete
  36. 4:51 PM - Exactly what is needed, but will never happen. How can it with reduction of editorial staff like seen at Florida Today? Better product with less staff to create the content? What the hell are they thinking?
