In the final days of the second quarter, I received five contributions totaling $102. With advertising, those gifts pushed me to 94% of my quarterly goal. At a time when hundreds are losing jobs, I'm counting my lucky stars to have a job at all. Once more: Thank you, all, for your continued financial (and non-financial!) support. The final breakdown of the $3,778 total:
- Reader donations: $1,146
- Advertising: $2,632
Funny how you were $600 short of the goal, and then right at the end, we're supposed to believe more than $300 came rolling in.
ReplyDeleteThis is by no means meant as snarky, jim.but how do you get by at roughly $17k a year, in san francisco? Some insight, as much as you can tolerate disclosing, would be helpful for those of us facing the gannets jackboot
ReplyDelete6:18, his answer to that is usually some blend of crap about investments and living frugally.
ReplyDeleteGiven the magical closing of the gap right at the end of the quarter, I'll be a lot more skeptical of these financial reports from now on.
6:23 - I'm one of those folks who sent Jim $20 during the last week, hoping he would get near or to his quarterly. Some of us appreciate the overall blog and Jim's hard work, even if not all posts from commenters are productive.
ReplyDeleteThe longer you are on this board, the more you appreciate that there is a kernel in almost every post, even those the corporate trolls are posting which can be very insightful of what corporate is doing, although that is clearly not their intent.
ReplyDeleteSome speak volumes, others whisper.

ReplyDelete5:39, I know you find it hard to believe and are wishing you knew how to make that happen at the end of the quarter for Gannett. Take a lesson from Jim, listen to the employees on this blog, and maybe all of your dreams will come true too!
ReplyDelete1:33, my sights would be set higher than $4,000 a quarter. But you keep your sights low, lemming troll!
ReplyDeleteAlso, the day I listen to any "employees" on this blog -- and some people here have not been employees for quite a while -- will be a sad one.
Oh dear God, the Lemming Troll Troll is back.
ReplyDeleteGuess you weren't sufficiently embarrassed for having ridiculed those who said layoffs were imminent. Oh, and you were in fine form up until about half-hour before the 700 layoffs rolled out over the comunity newspapers, weren't you, though, being the playground bully, calling people names?
Sure, you skulked away for a few days, LTT. But now you're back and we haven't forgotten what a dumbass you are. Or should I say what a "pinhead," "moron" and "idiot" you are?
My hunch is that you're on the inside and you knew layoffs were coming, hence the smokescreen, because layoffs are so much more fun when people are caught off-guard.
So guess what, LTT? The next time we see the bluster and name-calling in full bloom, we'll all know what's coming down the pike.
And I'll keep reposting this until you get a brain or a conscience.
10:34: Sorry, he's not capable of a brain or conscience so it's not worth getting upset over. The fact is, Jim is capable of doing what Gannett can't and that's getting the money in at the end of his quarter. He could raise the dollar amount and I'm sure the readers of this blog would make sure it happened for him. Just like if Gannett were more humane the employees would make sure it happened for Gannett, too. Gannett can't do that and it is frustrating as hell for them.
ReplyDeleteIn some way, you have to feel sorry for the 3:35 troll because he's really at a loss as to how to control what's going on in Gannett's reality right now. Dollars are dwindling, the corporate executives are stealing from the employees with their bonuses, and the blog is here to let EVERYONE know that Gannett is spinning out of control. When you think about it, corporate tries to control everything but they can't control what is written here so they try to name call and demean as a way to settle the score in the reader's eye who may not be an employee. As you can see, this poor troll is outnumbered so his voice is hardly heard and nobody believes his nonsense anyway. So really, there is no reason to respond to him. It just brings attention to the fact he's here when really, nobody cares.
I find it interesting that the lemming troll posts dropped off for a while. I thought at the time that was because this corporate poster was waking up to the fact that she or he was a Gannett employee as well, and the things she or he was reading on this board contained elements of truth for what has happened to him or her at Gannett.
ReplyDeleteUnfortuntately, I guess the power of money and the Gannett corporate structure regained its authority over this figure, and so lo and behold the lemming troll is back.
I actually believe that like My Boss, there are several corporate trolls. One favors the personal attacks on Jim and his S.F. lifestyle, but they have dropped off in recent weeks (perhaps the furlough?).
The troll only chimes in when they feel damage control is necessary. You can always tell a nerve was struck when the troll rears his ugly head. It's quite amusing and all telling.
ReplyDelete10:34, you just keep reposting that. But every time you do that, there will be responses about you being a lemming troll.
ReplyDelete11:11, then why doesn't he raise the dollar amount? The answer, of course, is he wouldn't meet it. He didn't even meet THIS amount! Are you so numerically challenged that you can't figure that out?
Until just a few days before the end of the quarter, Jim was almost $600 short of the goal. Funny how "advertising" and a couple of donations added $300 to the pot.
Keep trying, lemming trolls! It's fun to watch you stumble all over yourselves.
12:31, you're the one stumbling. If Jim wanted to fudge his numbers I'm pretty sure he would have made it look like he exceeded his goal. Any moron can figure out that reaching 94% of your goal is way better than being down year over year like Gannett always is. Maybe you should take a business 101 class?
ReplyDeleteAdvertisers wanting to give money to this blog and not to Gannett newspapers? Considering there is more readership here that makes perfect sense to me. The blog is interesting, your papers are not.
ReplyDelete6:18 My blog income supplements my savings, and that's what I live on -- with the additional support of a retired domestic partner who has his own income. We share expenses, and have no dependents. .
ReplyDelete"10:34, you just keep reposting that. But every time you do that, there will be responses about you being a lemming troll."
ReplyDeleteWhich would hurt my feelings something awful -- if I were 2 years old.
This blog is frequented by journalists, in case you haven't noticed. So of course there's going to be a spike in donations right on deadline. It happens every quarter.
ReplyDeleteHe was well short of the 94 percent mark, though, and then somehow he picked up about $300 in "advertising."
ReplyDeleteAlso, he has proclaimed this was one of the busier periods, so he should have met the 100 percent goal with ease.
You're failing, lemming trolls. Failing hard. Much like with your careers and your lives.
More than 700 people were laid off toward the end of the quarter. That generated a lot of hits, which generates ad revenue. Seriously, you couldn't figure that out by yourself?
