A reader recommends yesterday's Wisconsin Green Bay Press-Gazette, covering a milestone event:

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Yaay! Cheeseheads can pack heat!
ReplyDeleteOnce again, we beat the FIBs, last state in the nation to prohibit CC.
In retrospect, we probably should have realized that something was up when our paper brought on twice as many unpaid interns as usual this summer.
ReplyDeleteOf course, since they started well before the culling, it would be pretty hard to argue that they're replacing downsized reporters.
I'm more worried that these smart, talented, hardworking kids are going to go back to school in the fall and change their majors. You should have seen the look on their faces as they watched the layoffs go down. It was like watching Gannett kick a litter of puppies.
I would say that seeing the layoffs is about the best experience an intern could have about the grim realities of this business.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only person besides the OP who knows what a "FIB" is?
ReplyDeleteI wish we were allowed to do fun fronts like that. But over here (either by decree of corporate or our spineless, clueless EE, I'm not sure) we are so beholden to our new style/template with its crappy, design-killing rail, dictated lead/secondary/tertiary head fonts and no extra color.
ReplyDeleteDon't ask what that's done to our lifestyle fronts.which allow for zero font variety. Every now and again a particularly talented copy editor has the time amid all their other work to come up with something really good that sticks to the guidelines, but usually it's just so, so repetitive and boring.
Just wait until a fifth of the papers all use the same font, pun, photo and design treatment when (if?) the Design Hubs get fully rolled out. Can't wait to look at the Newseum's front pages then.
ReplyDeleteYou're wrong, 7:46. You're wrong.
ReplyDeleteToo many people in this string have been eating tainted crackers. 12:40 especially must have been unable to "hold" a cracker while walking across the locker room.
Oh, the cracker troll has stopped by. How terribly clever you must feel, as to repeat the line over and over. How your zings wound us! How dispirted your rapier wit and repartee leave us! Alas, woe is upon all who hope in vain for a worthy retort.

ReplyDeleteKudos! Love the headline!
ReplyDelete12:40 is correct. Green Bay and the other 9 state newspapers will eventually be moving to Des Moines. I imagine the hubs could handle this sort of treatment, but not much else.
ReplyDeleteAnd to 11:24, of course not!
Brilliant headline.
ReplyDeleteGreat headline.
ReplyDeleteNow, can someone tell me why Green Bay is advertising a copy desk job on JournalismJobs when there is a move scheduled to the Des Moines hub? I'm glad I thought to check here first before wasting my time on an application.
I agree with 10:56 and 5:10... That's a great hed!
