An independent journal about the Gannett Co. and the news industry's digital transition
I would hope ,especially after reading the 6:30 post concerning layoffs going on constantly, that posters here would lwrite in about EVERY layoff known or position eliminated and so forth. It is the ONLY way to let all of Gannettland made aware of what is truly happening and how bad the great Gannett employees are being treated.Remember ,they are being paid huge bonuses to lay people off and ruin lives.
What exactly is GANNETT local doing and are they having success?
I wonder what effect the design studio delays has had in the budget process. They were expecting to eliminate X number of jobs by X date with the consolidation of the layout desks. Now, that all has been pushed back by months.
What exactly is Gannett local? I can't keep track of all the goofy initiatives anymore.
10:14 In May, I posted the following about the then-new GannettLocal:Confirming months of speculation, Gannett disclosed this morning that it is establishing a new business unit that will offer marketing advice to small and midsize companies. The unit, GannettLocal, will be part of the U.S. newspaper division and will be led from offices in Phoenix by Brad Robertson, currently publisher of Gannett's Burlington, Vt., newspaper.
Please define what Gannett local considers small and midsize companies. Aren't basically ALL the accounts handled locally considered small or mid size? The larger accounts are already removed from the sites, correct? Will Gannett local in Phoenix provide this service across the country further eliminating positions? That doesn't really seem to be Gannett "local", more like Gannett centralized. Hope they realize this will allow the smaller publications to gain stregth because they are actually on the streets in the community. Anyone heard of www.afcp.org - I bet their members will gladly step in when Gannett turns its back.
Still no comments on the reported layoffs and also the anticipated layoffs ????Where the people who should know about these?Apparently none follow this blog !
I'm 10:14, and thanks for the reply, Jim. I do remember reading about that now. As I said earlier, it's hard to keep track.

11:06, the new GANNETT way is make the company unbearable to work at so people leave on their own. Don't fill the position and voila! No nasty layoffs!
1:07 Well if I were pulling in one of those six-figure salaries, I might have sufficient reason to stay no matter how unbearable this place became, or how many people said I was an incompetent jerk and do-nothing executive. Sticks and stones.....
In spite of the alleged hiring freeze, Gannett has a lot of choice positions being offered on CareerBuilder, including regional sale managers across the country that have not been filled in three weeks. Also Saleh must be having difficulties finding anyone who wants to be a cash flow manager at the Gannett Treasury.
Brilliant idea: regionalize sales. Think of the savings you could make by consolidating sales staffs in one single regional office.
G A N N E T TJust wanted to see what it felt like to type that.
GannettLocal will offer marketing advice to small and midsize companies.Really. This sounds like an April Fools gag.
9:11 so what did it feel like?
Strangely liberating. The extra spaces between the letters gave me a feeling of freedom and joy.

12:22 I am sure that Robin also intended that when she picked the Verlag typeface for the new logo. That old wily Gutenberg.
Can't believe how absolutely horrible the redesign of the New Jersey papers is.
Is anybody aware of the laws regarding layoffs and re-hirings? I'm at a Gannett paper that has recently hired a position or two that could have been filled by people let go in previous rounds. To the best of my knowledge, none of the employees who were let go were called back or offered the positions. Isn't there a law stating that you are supposed to contact those you have laid off before hiring new people? Note that the people who were let go were laid off, not fired for cause.
4:26 I seriously doubt such a law exits. Now, there are union contracts that include that requirement. But only 12% of Gannett employees are represented by unions.
4:26 no there isn't
Someone asked me if I would go back to my site if asked... in whatever capacity (I'm not a "one-trick pony").Working there for so long of time, yes, I miss the good people who are still twisting in the dank wind of Corporate Crap.My immediate supervisor in the last two years was a colleague, not an adversary (what a concept!): we worked together closely and smoothly, no ass-covering necessary. Some of the artists thrived on sharing their imaginative input and varied skill sets with others, and vice versa. The department was for the most part a cohesive moneymaker.Even the HR director -- an executive after all, where most execs can turn a blind eye (and most did) was a top-notch guy -- and didn't. In fact, made it a point not to.But going back after the treatment I and so many others received (my signature phrase is "after being treated like a used condom")?Hell, no!Yeh, some dude/dudette to that will say, "Well, good! We're glad to get rid of you" in between wiping off the boot polish from their tongues.I don't care. I like my health having returned. I like getting a good night's sleep. I like not dealing with a lot of departments lacking strong mentoring and leadership and that staff's resultant paralysis. But most of all, I like having my life back. This rather finite quality of my mere existence, talent or no talent, valued to some, offensive to others, it all had become just water running down the drain of half-baked initiatives and schmooze fests.
9:54 I heard it has to be close for Dickey or stubby.
Jim, you appear to be deleting a lot of posts again. Too nasty, directed at you? What up?
10:25 Those were profane and sexual references based on executives' last names.
Gross, immature and potentially libelous wordplay. Not something anyone with any maturity or taste wants to read. You didn't miss anything.
Just shows you how angry most people are at current leadership, and what they fear. At USAT, new deputy axewoman susie ellwood has yet to meet with senior editors two weeks after her arrival. And she's in charge of day to day ops? Be scared. Very scared.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
