Phoenix | Zidich 'warning labels' now on stories

Zidich
The Arizona Republic's good coverage of the Fiesta Bowl spending scandal has been complicated by the fact that Publisher John Zidich sits on the college football tournament group's executive committee.

To deal with that, the paper is now adding italicized "disclaimers" to the bottom of bowl stories, the Phoenix Business Journal says today.

From a Republic story today:

"John Zidich, CEO and publisher of The Arizona Republic, has been on the Fiesta Bowl's 25-member board of directors since 2005. He joined the bowl's five-member executive committee in 2010. The Arizona Republic is a Fiesta Bowl sponsor."

  1. A "disclaimer" is a great idea. I wish the Republic would add these to the bottom of each and every story. It would save me valuable time looking through the rag.
    Example:
“Lame” Stories that were a last minute thrown together space filler.
“ Sucks” anything written by the editorial staff.
“Blows” Any story that was written without having facts thoroughly checked.

  4. Bonehead! You need to resign immediately if you don't leave the bowl committee. Gannett management. Do something. This looks bad.

  5. So they add disclaimers, but only after he's called out by media pundits. This looks worse and worse. Adding the disclaimer essentially admits that they were wrong with the way they handled things in the first place but that Zidich is not willing to put an end to the conflict.

No real surprise though. Gannett is all about the money and he's a big money guy who's going to do whatever he can to protect his perks and giant salary. And he's high enough in the company that Dubow and his cronies are apparently fine with that.

  6. JZ, are you being strategic enough? Maybe you should have Misner call an EC meeting to review? Wait, maybe you should call an all manager's meeting. Wait, what's your digital strategy? Wow, this is a train wreck!

  7. In the know in AZ4/06/2011 6:06 AM

Some one should investigate Mr. Zurich and his cronies at AZ Central. Many MANY kick backs to him and Mike Coleman. Dickey is aware of this and has turned the other cheek, but it is very peculiar that people like Bob Dickey and Zidich and others have very interesting positions as board members of hospitals and local companies that all appear to have a very interesting relationship with the newspaper.

Also, someone should take a hard look at the "consultant fees" being accumulated at AZ and ask one simple question: "who is this consultant related to?". I am all sure you will be shocked.

Maybe Gracia Martore wants to send out her "auditors" and really check under the hood out there. It might be a time for some of Dickey' lieutenants to leave. There is a major cover up going on and this ismjust the beginning.

All that you say is true, expect that there is nothing for Gannett executive management to "find out" Martore and all know about all of this it is not a secret in any shape or form, they all support Zidich that is the whole problem with the Gannett company.

  9. 9:44 PM - You are right on, It's like.....I'm going to go tell dad (Dubow, Martore, Dickey) about what you (Zidich) did and how you are acting", except there is one huge problem, dad (Dubow, Martore, Dickey) all know what you (Zidich) did and are doing and not only that we support you 100%. What a joke the whole company is with their we are above all of this and of course we would never be involved with anything that looks like a scandal.

  10. Plus that baloney explanation JZ gave to the Fiesta Bowl investigators, included in that thick report. Wonder if he was under oath.

  11. Ok I live in Phoenix where all property records and addresses are public records, however, most people that are in the public eye have their property listed under a trust or other name. Well lo and behold I typed in John Zidich's name in the accessor site and he came up... check it out.. this is just another example of pure incompetence that he would be the publisher of a newspaper and have his address and property holdings so easily accessible by anyone.

It's not about the value of the home, it is that you can find out where they live, usually high profile people do not want anyone to know where they live for obvious reasons, especially if you work in the media. But it looks like that is lost on Gannett employees...

  20. So, you think people who work in the media should have special privileges? Lol Maybe your right John.
