  5. A local woman, furloughed from Gannett, uses her $285 unemployment check as seed money to start her own business, one which some industry analysts describe as "the next Microsoft."

  7. John Zidich becomes Executive Director of the Fiesta Bowl AND buys Bourbon Street strip club in Phoenix while staying on as Publisher at the Arizona Republic. OC meetings move to Bourbon Street. Says there's no ethical issues because he's making sure the reporting is transparent and what could go wrong mixing athletes, strippers and reporters.

  8. According to a Gannett survey, teenagers are rebelling when it comes to their media choices. While their older siblings have gravitated towards Facebook, smart phones and iPads, they are coming full circle to where their grandparents are: reading their local print newspapers.

This, according to a survey done by a USAT reporter, who interviewed his young daughter.

In the interests of diversity, a neighbor's black child was also interviewed, but the data was thrown out when the child didn't recognize the word "newspaper."

  9. Gannett papers and products are selling like hotcakes, according to an announcement from its corporate headquarters in McClean, Virginia.

"By allowing our local sites to actually be local once again while focusing on meaningful content instead of fluff," said president and CEO Craig Wobud, "we have attracted both readership and advertisers at an unprecedented scale."

Wobud also announced the termination of Gannett's consolidation trend. "Consolidation does not work for the authentic local appeal our market needs," Wobud said.

Wobud said that the consolidation projects which were intended to cut costs misled Gannett's customer base of readers and advertisers -- a move he called "mistaken, greedy and fairly hare-brained because the market needs a strong, genuine, locally autonomous foundation at every site."

Wobud also said that Gannett hopes to re-hire most of its previously laid-off staff.

"We lost a lot of extremely talented, loyal people -- and that was a mistake," Wubod said.

  12. Jim does some research. People here are man enough to say who they are. The mindless attacks on mid-level managers cease. The liars who say they have started successful businesses admit they have drawn unemployment for years, and that is their "successful business."

  13. "We lost a lot of extremely talented, loyal people -- and that was a mistake," Wubod said.

Not sure which is funnier -- that you use this as a humorous statement, or that you fail to see the double meaning of using that statement on April 1.

  14. Fired Gannett Local employee who plans to donate kidney buys a lottery ticket and wins $20MM. Wouldn't that be great!

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
