Awards | Gannett Blog is a finalist in Mirror honors

Syracuse University announced finalists today for the 2011 Mirror Awards, which the New York school bills as the top awards for excellence in media industry reporting.

I'm one of six nominated for Best Single Article in Digital Media, for my December post about the Freedom Forum foundation's extraordinary overspending on its signature project: the Newseum, a museum about news history in Washington. The non-profit Freedom Forum, launched in 1991 with $650 million in Gannett stock, was the original Gannett Foundation.

Overall, there are 30 finalists in seven Mirror Award categories. The competition drew more than 200 entries from publications including The New York Times and the New Yorker magazine.

Winners will be announced June 7 in New York City.

Now in their fifth year, the awards are sponsored by Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

  4. This blog has been a real eye-opener to me. I didn't think anyone would be particularly interested in the operations of an American corporation, or that it would generate wider interest. I was wrong as you have shown and I think it is a benefit to shine lights in corners of this country that have traditionally operated in the shadows.

  10. Great work there and for your work in publicly exposing Dubow et al’s usage of Gannett Foundation money – with its approval - for donations to their favorite charities in their own names.

  12. I wish u would have realized that in conjunction with issuing municipal debt, more timely ongoing audited disclosure to the public is required which is easily available online from services like emma... just pulling up a tax form and writing about it to me is hardly worth any award... Thanks for an enjoyable blog about gannett however...
