  2. 9 gone in Tallahassee not counting artists.

  3. Perhaps the paywall "experiment" isn't producing untold sums of cash?
(Or, perhaps it's all going to the Crystal Palace as bonuses?)

  4. 1:41, what's this "not counting artists" stuff? Just kidding: I don't mean that weirdly, just an irony because Gannett doesn't count 'em either.

It's one thing for content to suck with shoddy writing from exhausted staff (no slight on them!), and it's another thing when local advertisers are not getting local service.

To be fair, some advertisers don't care; however, others do -- a lot. And Gannett is losing the latter's ad dollars to other venues where once they had loyalty.

Handling several Big Money accounts myself, frequenting said store, the store knowing that I did their ads and often requesting me specifically, I've been accosted first-hand by an irate (former) advertiser or two. Trust me, it's unnerving.

"Why can't I get what I pay for anymore! You used to do great work, the best!"

I just shrug my shoulders and say, "Hey, they laid me off."

FACT: The paywall plan is bubbling to the top with plans forthcoming to roll them out to the entire company soon. Aren't there three tests going on right now that have been testing for close to a year now.

  6. Des Moines ad production center is "behind". East time zone folks could be late. We are still waiting on over 20 pages in L'ville. Less than an hour till press start time. I remember my old Granny saying something about putting all of your eggs in one basket....

  7. Hey 8:37 – Not everything that floats to the top is worth crowing about.
Recall what you saw the last time you got off the john.

And if the USCP are all going paywall, I hope you're not in advertising, because your job will probably disappear because they won't be able to afford you.

  8. There was a big rollout across the company for Yahoo. Excitement was built up around a contest but we are still waiting to hear who the big winners are. Really discredits management when they don't follow through with their word.

  9. 10:38-

That's because there aren't any big winners. I would image the crystal palace is hoping we forget about that that stupid contest, and then we can quitely sweep the huge failure it has become under the rug.

  10. Asheville Citizen Times laid off the last of their production designers and spec artists yesterday. Total of nine. Three applied for and got ad traffic positions. One left 2 weeks before the ACT transitioned to the GPC. Most of these people had been with the ACT for 18-20+ years.

  11. 8:10 I'm also hearing that circulation could be next at ACT. Some good people let go yesterday at the ACT. Good luck to them!

  12. 9 gone in Tallahassee not counting artists.

NINE? That's a huge number for a paper the size of Tallahassee. From what departments?

  13. 10:03 PM thanks for putting a laugh in my day! (Recall what you saw the last time you got off the john).

  14. Tallahassee
    1 IT
    3 Circ
    1 proofrunner
    1 pressman
    3 interns
    3 graphic artists

  15. Wow, that's 12, not 9, in Tallahassee.
Plus another in IT (cops reporter) who got fed up and quit.
Word there is the newsroom = ghost town.

No wonder the EE got a ring.
Look at how much more revenue he can send to the home office.

  17. 2:51 gets a stupidity ring. The earlier reference said 9, not counting artists. The 12 included the artists.

Let me guess -- you make a lot of mistakes, and then you blame other people. Great combination, slick. You and Jim should have lunch.

  18. 12:51 Let me guess--you NEVER make mistakes, but you love to point out others' minor errors. Great combination, Slick. You and your ego should have lunch.

  19. Well, there's a mistake for you to discuss at lunch. I meant 4:31. I blame no one but myself, however, and don't mind getting one of your "stupidity rings," as I will consider the source and count it as a compliment.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That wasn't a minor error. You missed the entire point of the count being 9 and not 12.

  21. Interns are not laid off, it is the end of the spring semester

  22. I hope all Gannetteers are ready for another dread filled week. Will this be the last last week of employment, and so the world turns for Gannett employees. Just another day in layoffville!
I hope all you hangers on can take still another week of a total stressed out life.
You should really take the advice that so many posters have given.Get the hell out.
    I ,a FORMER 12 year vet,look forward to Mondays
and a new work week.Paid very well ,no stress and love my job.
    Signed
    Ex-Gannetteer with some gonads.

  23. Each week somebody has to make a post that essentially says, "Hope you're all ready for more stress. The axe is about to fall."

And these posts are made with no real knowledge of what is or isn't happening. Although there have been layoffs the last couple weeks they have been selective and only affected a handful of sites.

So, unless the goal is to cause people more stress, let's cut it out. If you somehow KNOW that layoffs are occurring in, let's say, Phoenix, post that information. If it's just wild speculation, why bother? Everybody in Gannett knows their jobs are insecure. I don't see any reason to reinforce that every week with "sky is falling" posts that aren't backed by facts.

8:39 -- Congrats on getting out, but I don't see any reason to try and make those who haven't feel bad. If they're already stressed, posts like yours won't help.

  24. I wonder how soon Phoenix will have to apologize to the readers again. Once again BIll Bergen had to work all night again because the pressroom he has been in charge of for less than a year can't print papers fast enough...With this continuing problem what did Gannet do? Yes cut even more presses from production. I have worked at the paper over 20 years and the former bosses never had to work all dat and then have to come in and work all night. Maybe Bergen should re@negotiate his contract to be paid hourly instead.
Maybe V.P. Bob K needs to understand if he retaliates against minons for exercizing their rights there are reprocussions. Maybe Bergen needs to understand People are human and not machines. That the discipline system in place worked great and the paper ALWAYS got out on time. Does the brass in Phoenix not see if you terrorize employess it will create problems....Remember the paper ALWAYS got out on time before this new man in chatge tore up the harmony.

  25. Every other major online and broadcast news source has been all over the death of Bin Laden for the last 20 minutes. USAToday.com??? Still not a single mention with the biggest breaking news story of this generation. Talk about a totally out-of-touch "Nation's Newspaper" - and pathetic excuse for being on task. WTF? They all asleep at the cockpit??? Or perhaps, there's just no one there anymore on a Sunday night...all RIFFED in the name of the bottom line.

  26. USAT posted a story within the past two minutes.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
