10. What strategic role does PointRoll play and how do you see that business growing in a very competitive market?
9. Does ShortTail's relatively short life mean premium ad space -- ad networks -- isn't that valuable to advertisers? (And what does that mean for Gannett?)
8. Gannett Digital's web traffic and sales are mostly controlled by local newspapers and local broadcast stations. Plus, USA Today still operates fairly separately. How will you break down those silos?
7. What role should newly appointed Chief Marketing Officer Maryam Banikarim play in Gannett Digital? (For example, will she handle national sales efforts across all distribution channels?)
6. When you rate your performance in one, two and three years, what do you expect to have accomplished?
5. Do you believe in paywalls? (And if so, where have they worked?)
4. Do you believe there's a place for print newspapers in the future? (If so, in what capacity?)
3. Should reader comments on local websites be moderated differently than they are today?
2. In five years, how should GCI's overall revenue breakout look by division: U.S. Community Publishing; broadcasting; USAT, and Digital?
1. And the final question for just-named Chief Digital Officer David Payne? It's at the top of the comments section, below.

1. How many people has Gracia Martore said you need to fire in order to earn your Gannett Management Committee stripes?
ReplyDeleteFor question 9, STM was an also-ran in an extremely crowded online video ad network world. It's offering was confusing and provided negligible value to its publishing partners. Frankly, I'm surprised they found a sucker to write a check for the assets.
ReplyDeleteNote: I'm indebted to a reader for gathering these questions.
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteGreat questions! I can't wait to see him answer 10 through 1 !!! I hope he responds!
Nice way to show your stripes Jim. Way to play to the Lemming Trolls
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteI love your *final* question - Martore needs to fire to hire!
This is the dumbest post I've ever read on this blog. Is that really the best you could come up with?
ReplyDeleteGood questions, but you seem to assume a 1-2 or 3 year tenure. I'm not at all confident he will last that long, especially when you consider the sharks are already circling behind the glass of the Crystal Towers.
ReplyDeleteNeither new hire will last, unless they're successful biting the 11th floor shark tank.
ReplyDeleteMore questions: Where does this leave Josh Resnik and Jack Williams?
ReplyDeleteWilliams must be clenching his jaw and biting his tongue.
ReplyDeleteGannett would be better off if Jack Williams left, or was pushed out the door. What has he accomplished?
ReplyDeleteThese are excellent questions. These questions are on the top of everyone's mind across all Gannett. I would like to hear his position on pay walls. I also want to hear about his success at Short Tail!
ReplyDeleteI wish the analysts who cover Gannett would start asking these questions and demand more than the baseless answers Dubow and Martore spew.
I am interested in answers to all of these questions as well as what will his relationship be like with the other GMC members? Who does he actually report into? And why didn't anyone on the GMC know about him joining Gannett prior to the leak?
ReplyDeleteMy boss who is a member of the GMC was totally blindsided by this hire.
Isn't Jack Williams the one behind CareerBuilder and Cars.com? They are large components of the digital revenue. Gannett would be in even bigger trouble without them.
ReplyDeleteSo, this guy works at big corporate media (CNN - video) leaves to start a company that ends up failing and then runs back to big corporate media (Gannett - Newspaper). Hmmm, I think we have a good corporate bureaucrat that went off the ranch, but has come back to a nice safe haven like Gannett. Good boy David...Good boy. You are safe now.
ReplyDeleteWill 11g report to the new CDO or are they just focused on non-digital innovations?
ReplyDeleteWill social efforts be aligned under marketing or Digital? Where is it today?
Does the new CDO control and manage Mike Coleman and James Jackson in AZ Central and Cincy, respectively? Or is Dickey going to let them still spend millions on their own digital crap like mobile, chokethedealchicken, digital site design?
ReplyDeleteDavid Payne is going to be in a lot of pain at Gannett.
Based on their track record, I'm offering odds the sharks win.
ReplyDeleteCNN had a bunch of layoffs the last couple years, was his leaving there voluntary.... or so that their CEO/CFO/COO could nail their bonuses?
ReplyDeleteGreat questions Jim. Thanks for all you do!!!
ReplyDeleteJack Williams has thrown his CV at every digital vp job at large print publishers (McGraw-Hill, Conde Nast, et al) for the past 2+ years. I know several former GCI execs who are tired of fielding screening/reference calls about him. Since online classified revenue has tanked under Jack's "leadership" (Homefinder is a joke), it's no wonder he's still at Gannett - no one else wants him.
