GCI announces six recipients of 'Unsung Heros'

The annual awards, now in their 24th year, are for employees throughout the company "who give outstanding service every day,'' Corporate said in a statement today.

The winners were picked from more than 100 nominations this year; Gannett has 32,600 employees worldwide. Each winner will receive $1,000 and be honored at a reception on April 6 at headquarters in McLean, Va.

  1. Six?
    Only six?
Out of all those people busting their humps.
    6 people...what a lame shame.

Not the winners. I'm sure they are fine folks.

  2. 6 winners might sound small. But ONLY 100 were nominated. Supervisors out there -- wow. Writing a nomination is just too much work for you?

  3. These things are counter-productive, so it figures that Gannett uses this psychology. First, one has to be nominated. And we all know how likely that is given one particular's pecking order. Second, it sends what now has become the hallmark of Gannett's mindset: the rest of you, unsung for a year, five, 10, 20 or 25, are worthless. Reminds of the scene in "Office Space": -- "What exactly would you say you do here?"

  4. I attempted to nominate 2 of my staff, but both declined. Reason stated? Both thought it was a bunch of corporate BS.

  6. 7:41 oh Pleeeze! If you really cared you'd have just done it. I can't believe how you LTs can even dump on something like this. It must be awful to wake up and look in your mirror every morning!

  7. I nominated someone...but they did not work for Tara so they did not win. Really...look at the winners the last 4-5 years Tara ran the thing...

  10. I happen to know someone who has won an Unsung Hero award. He works at the Maryland Operations Center and truly represents the essence of this award. He works hard, goes above and beyond the call of duty without being asked and when is asked is available and generously provides his knowledge and advice to his co-workers and management team. Beyond that, he's just a nice person. I'm personally glad that there is a way to recognize his efforts and those like him. I can't understand the cynicism over something that is clearly a good thing. Even if you hate the company, you must be able to see this at least as one point of light in the darkness.

  11. Anyone who lands a better job and leaves this company is my unsung hero.

  12. Nominations unofficially require publisher review if a supervisor is sending. Ground troop nominations may not have ashot because they are seen as hard to screen. This might explain the low number of nominations. Publishers tend to say, let's just send our best shot.

  13. 7:02 you are absolutely wrong. I've nominated seven people over the years and never once asked permission. By the way three won! Stop pissing on a program that recognizes great people. Go back to whining about bonuses!

  14. Wow! A thousand bucks!

  15. And before taxes, too!

  16. I think this is a very big deal for the winners, and I'm delighted for their good fortune.

  17. I think it's a great thing, too, 8:20 p.m. I think the comments you find so offensive were directed at G A N N E T T executives, who slide millions into their pockets, while tossing a few crumbs at the peons.

  18. How far would $1,000 go in Dubow's or Martore's or Dickey's or Hunke's daily budget? Not far, I'd say.

  19. 9:42 your negative, hate em all attitude conesvthrough loud and clear. My point us there are lots of other strings to express your rage. This should be one string that's all about celebration

  20. Well, yeah, let's CELEBRATE before we're laid off!

  21. Congrats to anyone who can get a molecule of recognition and some cash out of this company who doesn't reside in and office or make 6 to 7 figures. Raise a glass to the hard working people...and to Jim for exposing the nonsense.
