It's the same URL -- www.gannett.com -- but with a significantly new look, all part of the just-launched corporate brand campaign.
Among the biggest changes: There are no more newspapers or TV stations. They're now all described as "brands" with websites.

Oh LOL. Do you see how the mom is portrayed in the tabs on the home page? Way to offend, G!
ReplyDelete"At MomsLikeMe.com, mothers can... get a good night's sleep."
ReplyDeleteWell sure, now that we can't give BJ techniques in Cincy any longer...
So much for this being a "digital" launch. The webpage is not built for consumption on an iPad, iPhone or Android devices. And definitely NOT a WAP enabled browser.
ReplyDeleteGood job Robin! I also love the weightless comments from Dubow. What an idiot.

ReplyDeleteLOL. Gannett could not reach me on my iPad this morning as the home page is not HTML5 capable.
ReplyDeleteAs a former Gannetteer now employed in the health industry, I can tell you nearly every M3 (third-year medical student) has an iPad, and the numbers are growing quickly among the residents and doctors.
Great point Pointroll 8:41a! I left Gannett to work at Yahoo and I will say that we refuse to use Pointroll whenever we can because the current management team at Pointroll shares publisher information with Gannett and USA Today!
ReplyDeleteAside from being just wrong, we do not trust Pointroll "A Gannett Company" anymore.
OHHH NOOO... That word... 'SOLUTIONS' again!!!
ReplyDeleteI've fainted.
Say 'solutions' 12 times very fast... your lips will freeze.
really.
Throwing up in my mouth a little at becoming "a brand."
ReplyDelete8:36 and 8:48
ReplyDeleteWRONG!
If the new www.gannett.com isn't working on your iPad, maybe you need another cup of coffee. The animation, navigation and all links are in HTML5 and render properly on that device.
ReplyDeleteThe only flub is a Brightcove video in Flash, and that's a correctable error, since Brightcove supports HTML5.
There's enough to complain about without making up stuff.
Craig and Gracia's letter today says, "For employees, we offer rewarding careers and opportunities to grow."
ReplyDeleteOpportunities to grow???? With good people being sacrificed nonstop and media properties scrambling madly to deploy the few who are left to plug the holes? Hardly.
On iPad too, issue may be flash based but the caption "this player is not enabled for html5 delivery" is displayed ...you would think a minor issue, but it's no way to make a first impression...
ReplyDeleteSo much for Local Local Local.
ReplyDeletesmall detail in browser address bar--favicon is old logo. How about a simple, blue 'G' ?
ReplyDeletenew gannett website works perfect on mytouch 4g running android 2.2. Hey apple, how's html5 working out for you?
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
a concerned pointroll employee
Interesting. There seems, though, to be not just a small bit of exageration going on, particular in the area of the newspaper "brands."
ReplyDeleteThe old Corporate website included short histories of each newspaper and TV station. For the papers, it included the year the paper was founded, significant moments in its history, such as Pulitzers, plus information about the communities they served.
ReplyDeleteAll that appears to be lost, now.
@8:36 reminded me of this. I'm still waiting for a smartphone app for the Gannett brand (must conform to corporate speak!) in my city. It might be interesting to see how many Gannett brands have apps. They seem to not be within reach.
ReplyDeleteJim. Why would Gannett need to supply histories for each newspaper and tv, and not the actual newspaper and tv website. the old corporate website was a incredibly dated, and full of non-relevant garbage. apparently everyone missed the tab on the website where it lists and links out every local and national brand affiliated with gannett http://www.gannett.com/section/WHOWEARE11

ReplyDeleteFor a little perspective, here's the Gannett corporate homepage from June 1, 2002:

Clean! Concise!
Gesh, don't blame Gannett because you can't view it with your iPads. Blame Apple!!!
ReplyDeleteThe reason that very few sites embrace HTML5 is that the HTML5 standard is still in a working draft stage.
ReplyDeleteWhy code to a moving target?
No problems accessing it with my Archos 101 android based tablet.
