ReplyDeleteAsbury Park? Anything to report?
ReplyDeleteSo, is the ax going to fall again here in Westchester? With the circ continuing to drop, I worry that corporate will be scaling every dept back.
ReplyDeletedon't know how true but just heard Nashville got hit...anyone know for sure?
ReplyDeleteWhat can Gannett do for you?
ReplyDeleteReaders, advertisers and staffers from Cincinnati’s 26 weekly newspapers are asking that question as if Cincinnati.com’s redesign is any indication of Enquirer Media’s future direction, then those newspaper’s days appear numbered.
Downgrading CommunityPress.com - once a standalone brand with localized pages for areas they covered, to vanilla-type pages now being sold as “hyper-local” pages under Cininnati.com’s umbrella appears to speak volumes.
Considering the weekly’s print editions have, on average, more reach within Cincinnati’s market area than the daily – beating it by 9%, it seems more than a risky move to eliminate their online brand presence.
Today’s technology easily allows Gannett to grow and maintain both, yet it chose not to. Why?
Westchester will probably close. Publisher Fisch has ruined every paper he has been at. Check it out.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to find Westchester circulation for 10 years ago vs. now. I couldn't find 2000 circ -- that info certainly exists online somewhere, but I couldn't run it down in the time allotted.
ReplyDeleteBut it does appear that Westchester's daily circ is down from about 141,000 in 2005 to about 80,000 now. That's a pretty dramatic drop.
Anonymous said... expected some announce about building being sold soon. have plan about your future. change is coming.
ReplyDeleteWestchester's daily circulation now is actually below 50K. An amazing nosedive. The big drop from 150K came during Henry M. Freeman's reign as EE it should be noted.
ReplyDeleteYes. The building was sold two weeks ago and surveyors have been there several times since. Corporate, in typical secretive and sneaky fashion, has made no announcement to employees who have a right to know these things.
Heard about the advertising cut made at DR but nothing about one in newsroom. Any info?
ReplyDeleteWestchester's daily circulation is actually 14 ... Bagel Boys deli in Suffern is the only place carrying the paper in the northern suburbs. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous said...where there is no vision the people perish. top mangerment hoarding there peeks. on the back of employes while furlough and layoffs and wages freeze.you wonder why business is not growing for company greed.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous said...westcheter site circulation dept numbers are droping and droping and droping.dept will be outsource by end of year in my opinion.
ReplyDelete3:40 - what a sad commentary on the "reporters" remaining at the Journal News that this happened two weeks ago and none of them were able to even find out about it. I heard the building will become an indoor sports center.
ReplyDeleteTJN journalists are too busy looking over their shoulders waiting to get stabbed in the back. If CR cold do it to LB, she can do it to anyone and everybody knows it.
ReplyDeleteAccording to ABC Sept. 30, 2000, Journal News circ daily was 143,685 M-S and 173,000 Sunday.
ReplyDeleteSo many Ipad owners are trying to get onto Rupert Murdoch's Daily site that the Web-only publication crashes repeatedly. Apparently the readership demand exceeded the Daily's own internal estimates. This goes to show the reader thirst for innovative Internet publications, and would be something a chief digital officer at Gannett would want to replicate, if we had one.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous said... westchester site circulation dept heavy at top of mangerment less than 50.ooo a day no need to be heavy at top.while the feet soldier are doing the hard work. while the pretty boys and women that are on the team are laughing at you it is sad that outsource is the only option.
ReplyDeleteIn a new regulatory filing, Gannett revealed today that company-wide employment fell to 32,600 as of Dec. 31 vs. 35,000 at Dec. 31, 2009. That's a much smaller decline than many Gannett Bloggers had predicted or feared.
ReplyDeleteI'll be writing more about this U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission 10-K filing later today.
Brevard on Wednesday: At least 5 layoffs. 2 copy editors, 1 photographer and 2 in the pressroom.
ReplyDeleteBrevard on Wednesday: 2 in advertising, managers.
ReplyDeletewho at brevard?
ReplyDelete@7:04PM, the wrong one in advertising for damn sure.
ReplyDeleteAnonymou said...westchester site circulation dept heavy at top of mangerment. to top heavy in the dept. when the leader of this dept look to cut like and snake and the grass. cut your grass before you get outsource. it is and sad day in the newpaper business at this site.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the 5,000 employee reduction stated by MyBoss is starting - by the end of 2011, we'll see if he/she is right. I hope The Journal News relocates to leased office space in some generic office park alongside the interstate, so the buzz of traffic drowns out the moaning of staffers.
ReplyDelete@ 6:57 What were the disciplines of the managers let go? (Retail or classified)
ReplyDeleteOur ad revenue is STILL TANKING! It's never been this slow for this long. Yet it's the same old song in dance in sales. I know working in sales is brutal, I could never do it. But our lazy sales reps don't even try and even worse, our management seems like their only solution is to make cuts, EXCEPT LAZY SALES REPS! At this rate I don't think we are ever getting busy again. GPC is gonna have to start laying off people.
ReplyDeleteStill amazing to me that the Journal News building was sold two weeks ago and no reporters even were aware of the fact until it was disclosed here. Sad. Just sad.
ReplyDeleteJim and fellow blog readers...any insight into this? McLEAN, VA - Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) announced today that Donna E. Shalala and Karen Hastie Williams plan to retire from the company's Board of Directors this year. The company also announced that John E. Cody, former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Broadcast Music, Inc., has been elected to the Board, effective immediately.

10:25 - Shows how the Journal News is not only connected to their community but to what's going on at their own working place. Are these people zombies?
ReplyDelete* meant to say disconnected NOT connected!
ReplyDeleteJust heard that the Metromix pub in Nashville got the axe. Are any of these pubs successful, anywhere?
ReplyDeleteI heard GCI sent out a survey today testing names for a new daily deal website, like Deal Chicken and Planka, whatever that is. Somehow I like groupon better.
ReplyDeleteI went to work Tuesday and found out another benifit cut. In Phoenix Pressroom it was posted if you need EAP (mental health help) INSTEAD Of calling a local number and getting an apointment with a professional. You now go to a website. Find ur own help. And if that doesn't work....You can get "telephonic help"..I hope ones problem is not tooo serious..I hope the telephonic help isn't a call center in India.
ReplyDeleteAnonymos said... Westchester site Sold Sold Sold. plan your future in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteAccording to ABC, Journal-News circ for last reporting period is 79,525 daily and 101,891 on Sunday. Forget 2000, those numbers are off about 45 percent from just five years ago. Undoubtedly, the numbers will continue to crater as the news hole and staff continues to shrink. I suspect by 2012, the editorial staffs of The Journal-Snooze and Poughkeepsie Journal will be fully combined, and there will be just a Dutchess County bureau with a handful of reporters to fill two local news pages, with maybe a staffer and stringer to do local sports.
ReplyDeleteBut both papers are seriously understaffed now. I sent a couple of tips about stories I had seen elsewhere about items of local interest to a former colleague (I am a J-N survivor). They not only hadn't heared about them, they barely had someone who could pick up the phone and write about them. As it was, for one item about supermarkets closing, they simply cited the original source of the story.
I also suspect the reporters left at the J-N will soon go to the mobile reporting method used at the Bergen Record, where everyone essentially works from home and has a laptop to write, blog, etc. Then they'd just need a small office wherever they could get cheap space for editors, ad sales, and a conference room where they can lay off more people.
If the end isn't near, it's pretty damn close.
The circulation in Westchester is a joke. It has been a joke for the past three years, yet we still have a VP of Operations. Fuuny thing is the operations are actually happening at another paper's site. So the obvious question is : WHY DO THEY NEED THIS GUY???
