USAT | Life on front line of 'war to end all wars'

"I was a snappy soldier."

-- Frank Buckles, the last World War I Doughboy, in a 2007 interview with USA Today. Buckles died yesterday at his home in Charles Town, W. Va.; he was 110, The New York Times says today.

  1. Craig Dubow - the last of the Gannett "Dough"boys?

  2. I can not make the comparison of a WW I dough boy and Craid Dubow. How do you compare a soldier, man of honor and public servant to a CEO of a corporation that exhibits none of those characteristics?

  3. When I first started in the business, there were still obits about Spanish American War vets! Not many, but some.

Like the actor who portrayed a Gambino boss one time: "This thing, this thing ours, it's only 10 minutes."

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
