The entirety of a three-paragraph story today:
The Des Moines Register announced an advertising restructuring and other changes that will result in about 10 employee layoffs.
The company said new positions would be added but gave no details.
"Our number one goal is to provide result-driven, multimedia solutions to our business clients, and with this restructure we are better able to deliver on that commitment," said Register Publisher Laura Hollingsworth. "I understand these changes impact our employees and their families and truly appreciate their hard work and commitment."
Total cuts now exceed 200
Including these 10 layoffs, Gannett Bloggers have now reported an estimated 203 jobs eliminated at 24 sites in recent weeks. We're tracking these cuts on this spreadsheet; please see if your site is included, then post your latest figures in the comments section, below.
A reminder: We're counting all jobs in all divisions -- not just the U.S. newspaper division.

You know things are getting difficult when they start cutting revenue generating positions. The newspaper industry is what it is.....but the corp culture needs an overhaul. You put decent people in charge to make good decisions.....let them do their jobs.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how ridiculous these corporate drones make themselves sound. Every cut is done to "improve" the product and better serve readers and advertisers.
ReplyDeleteAnyone familiar with the inner workings of the papers know that the cuts do exactly the opposite. The products continue to get worse and the advertisers get poorer and poorer service from less experienced or frazzled employees.
Still, they insist on smearing lipstick on the pig. Funny thing is, nobody is buying anymore. Not the employees, not the advertisers, and not the readers. It just makes them look foolish.
I think some folks might find it refreshing if they just said, "Hey, we're cutting costs like everybody else."
Irony is having to cut costs because GPC raised their allocation to you... in your own building.

ReplyDeleteCome on Jim 6:20 is way out of line.
ReplyDeleteJim and Bob were seen traveling together back from the annual meeting two years ago. Why wasn't that reported.

Great point. They act as though everyone is stupid. They would be more respected if they spoke openly and honestly instead of hiding behind smoke and mirrors. It isn't working anymore.
