Corporate just announced that the regional advertising director of Gannett Wisconsin Media in Green Bay, Scott Johnson, has been named publisher of the St. Cloud Times in Minnesota. Johnson succeeds Bill Albrecht, who earlier was named president of the Media Network of Central Ohio and president and publisher of The Advocate in Newark, Ohio.
Johnson's is the ninth appointment of a publisher this year alone among GCI's 81 U.S. community dailies. The news came today in a written statement that included a quote attributed to U.S. newspaper division President Bob Dickey. Fashioned and refashioned by publicists, quotes such as these risk sounding like commodities, rendering them less meaningful.
Quotidian quotations
Following are some of Dickey's quotes this year, with identifying names redacted. One of these is about Johnson. I've linked to the original statements.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Gannett's concept of execs: fungible assets.
ReplyDeleteGannett's concept of employees: fungible asses.
These things are probably written by a flak and then Dickey signs off on them.
ReplyDeleteYou have to understand, it's a busy man who oversees the demolition of his kingdom.
Scott Johnson is a great guy: Smart, gives a damn about his people, knows his numbers and works hard to take care of his customers. No newsroom chops, but he reads the newspaper and the Web site and, if paired with a good editor, will do OK in this regard. A good decision.
ReplyDeleteTo 5:31pm, thoughtful comment. I don't know Scott but wish him well.
ReplyDeleteWish Scott the best of luck and will be missed in GB/WI. He will do better for Minnesota than Brett Favre ever will.
ReplyDeleteScott's a stand-up guy and truly, St. Cloud's gain is our loss. Too bad he has to deal with GPC issues there too.
