Iowa City | GM is named; was Coloradoan ad exec

Gabe Aguirre, the advertising manager at the Fort Collins Coloradoan, was promoted to general manager of the Iowa City Press-Citizen today. He replaces Dan Brown, who left the newspaper without explanation last week.

Aguirre, 38, started his advertising career as an automotive account executive in 2000, the Press Citizen says in a story on his promotion. He joined the Coloradoan as a classified advertising manager in 2006. He was promoted to advertising manager in 2008.

West Group President Laura Hollingsworth told the paper: "I couldn’t be more excited to bring Gabe to Iowa City and the Press-Citizen. He is an experienced multi-media professional, and he has the knowledge and ability to leaPublish Postd us in best serving our customers and community in progressive and very necessary new ways."

Hollingsworth is also publisher of The Des Moines Register.

The Iowa City job is the third newspaper chief executive's position to turn over in Hollingsworth's West Group since September -- and at least the 11th overall within the U.S. newspaper division.
