Wausau | An advertising adjacency from hell

Did you know the McRib sandwich sold by fast-food giant McDonald's has a cult following? I didn't, until I flipped through this photo gallery, "The McRib comes to Wausau," published today on the Wausau Daily Herald's homepage in Wisconsin.

I'm not making this up. As I clicked through the seven photos (twice!), one of the ads that appeared next to the gallery included a link to a video offering quick tips about constipation. Now, that's an adjacency!

  1. Yes. McDonald's has been experimenting with six week runs of the McRib, and they have sparked a cult following. They put it on the menu for six weeks, then flip to another restaurant a few miles away. There is a Web site that tracks joints nationwide which are selling the sandwich, with testimonials from fans. I found it a couple of weeks ago, and don't have a link for you now. Given Mickey Dee's ad contributions, I am surprised USAT hasn't caught this fad yet and sought to cash in. (I haven't had one because McD not a favorite.).

  3. It doesn't appeal to boomers and the elderly, so the reorganized USAT not interested in the McRib. From that new verticle, it looks like they are rushing to piece together tough pieces on prostate cancer, which I read and learned that eating a fat-free diet seems to help.

  4. Jim, shame on you AND the Wausau paper for not correctly including the apostrophe in the name "McDonald's."

  6. Guilty as charged, 11:46-the-copy editor! And it's now fixed.

  7. Eat a McRib, and I believe you get the six-week runs described by 11:10.
