NYT: Under Zell, Tribune Co.'s bankrupt culture

From a New York Times story today, about the Tribune Co.'s collapse into bankruptcy after real estate mogul Sam Zell's 2007 purchase of a controlling interest in the publisher of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and other dailies:

The new management did transform the work culture, however. Based on interviews with more than 20 employees and former employees of Tribune, . . . [the] executives’ use of sexual innuendo, poisonous workplace banter and profane invective shocked and offended people throughout the company. Tribune Tower, the architectural symbol of the staid company, came to resemble a frat house, complete with poker parties, juke boxes and pervasive sex talk.

  1. There was another story in either the Arizona Republic or NY Times today (can't remember which) that said Americans weren't investing enough money towards their 401K's, hence, retirement... Well, with corporations like Sam Zell's and Gannett, I think I'll pass on letting them use any of my hard earned money. It's the bonus situation that really burns me up the most. Seems no matter what, good times or bad, the elite corporate rockstars get theirs... Is this what they teach in universities and business colleges today?

  2. Sounds like a bunch of ex-radio guys to me. Knew this would end badly. Just didn't anticipate how quickly.

  3. Hmm...let's see....newspapers run by people with no newspaper experience...hopeless dumbass ideas floated up as 'change'....stupidity marketed as an asset...rampant good-ol-boy-ism...what company does this remind me of?

  4. I always knew the Tribune guys were pr*cks, but now I also know they are classless, obnoxious, law-breaking pr*cks. Nice for them.

  5. 8:17 - you're right, Tribune sounds an awful lot like Gannett....minus the porn.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
