Wisc. ad production moving; 37 jobs to be cut
Green Bay Press-Gazette Publisher Kevin Corrado says the move to the Gannett Production Center at Des Moines will be effective Oct. 18, according to a story in the paper yesterday, and a Gannett Blog reader. The change affects Gannett's 10 Wisconsin newspapers. In a remark that defies recent experience at other worksites, Corrado says the switch "will be seamless for customers and readers."

To clarify - Green Bay hosts ad production for the six east Wisconsin dailies and all the weeklies, magazines, etc. in those markets. We've been doing ads in GB for Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Appleton, and Manitowoc for over a year.
ReplyDeleteKnowing this has been coming for a year hasn't made it much easier. My thoughts are with all of the fine people who lose their positions in October.

seamless? haha... BAHAHA... Prepare for a nightmare Wisconsin. And a word to those who will be let go. You'll actually be much happier. I speak from experience. It will seem like a whole world of stress and pain will be lifted away. It's the poor schmoes who are left dealing with the mess that the gpc creates who YOU'LL be feeling sorry for.
ReplyDeleteSeamless? I call BS. It's a disaster now coming out of Green Bay. Our ads are hard to read with all the drop shadows and tiny type, plus we struggle to get them on time or the correct size, or something is always going wrong with the software they use.

ReplyDeleteWhat a weasel! What a non-story! Do you think the average reader has a clue what this means, beyond 37 people losing their jobs? Did any of the other 9 papers in the state run such a story, or are they keeping it under wraps, as per usual?
What the hell. Why would corporate want to kill this goose that laid the golden egg. Wisconsin was the leader in producing profits, and yet management seems determined to kill it off. Incredible.

Oh come on, so now Obama is to blame for Gannett's corporate mismanagement and greed? Guess all the blatant thievery committed by banking institutions didn't have any impact on the labor market. And certainly the hundreds of billions spent to fund two wars isn't at all associated with America's ballooning debt obligations. It's so intellectually dishonest to frame everything that went wrong and continues to go wrong as Obama's FU's. The mess at Gannett and the upheaval in our economy have a "connect the dots" trail. People who are paying close attention know exactly how we arrived at the present, on both scores.

ReplyDeleteIf customers knew how many of their ads were already going to India they would be very surprised, and I hope a little ticked off. Notice that publisher Corrado didn't mention that part at all?
Hey sales reps...that's really why there are so many problems with your ad quality now. The people in the Green Bay ad prod center are doing the best that they can with the hand they have been dealt.
8:09 -If you don't like drop shadows and tiny type, the entire leadership at Green Bay is on instant messenger, they have email, and they have phones. You also have ample opportunity to note your personal preferences on your initial ad layout, the special instructions field of your insertion order, and your proofs.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what they could do about you selling too much copy into too small a space, but they could definitely drop the drop shadows for you.
As far as getting them on time or the correct size? I have no problem getting back what I want. Turn them in on deadline, use the right product codes, include specific instructions. I've had one production-caused credit in the last two years. The only times things are slow is when we've had to sell several tabs the week before and we've dumped a pile on them - but they have no say in when our sections are sold.
Obladee, life goes on. In three months your ads will be built by different people, with new fonts, new artwork, new colors, a new 'look' whenever you submit something other than a pickup, absolutely no consistency and no idea that you never spell Kaukauna correctly on your layouts. Like a Ad2pro ad every time.
I'm going to miss them.
Speaking as a former graphic designer at one of Gannett's Wisconsin locations, I will tell you the plan for consolidation of all ad production goes back to 2002. That is the year I first heard talk about having all ads built in a single location. Before Obama and before the recession. Anyway, all I will say to the designers in Green Bay is "I told you so!" When I walked away from Gannett in 2007, the designers who took my job were so happy to find jobs in their home state of Wisconsin (close to family and friends). Now those jobs are moving out of state. I knew this was going to happen, and that is why I started training for a new career. My advice to those still working in Green Bay: never trust Gannett or its managers.
