Apple: Eight reasons why the hubs aren't all bad

Visual design expert Charles Apple (left), a former Des Moines Register graphics director, has just posted his analysis of the newly announced five page pagination hubs. "I'm not happy with it at all,'' he cautions. "But it does seem a little better-structured than some of the other consolidation efforts I’ve seen. And at least some of the promises sound nice."

  1. Interesting analysis.
However... quote: "The company memos are quite clear. The job structures at the hubs has not yet been determined. When Gannett is ready, it’ll post job openings."
I don't believe that for a second. We were told the same thing about the Indianapolis & Des Moines graphic design hubs also and there never has, as of yet, been any job postings for anyone to transfer to at these sites.

  3. We don't have the details yet, and won't for months, but it is my impression _ contrary to Apple -- that copy editing functions will be involved in the hubs.

  4. Oops. Here's a clickable link on the copy editor issue.

  5. Fascinating about how the wire copy is edited at the hub, 5:16. Hmmmm ... I wonder if there will be a way for the NewsGate system to utilize one wire story file for all of the newspapers. For example, if a comma is fixed in one story it automatically updates in all other papers using the same file.

  6. 6:44: Yes, so long as someone doesn't "branch" it. You'll all learn what that sadly means sooner or later.

  7. Yes it can 6:44. NewsGate is all about separating content from publication channel.

  10. I did click through to the link about the wire copy editing probably being done at the hubs. This makes sense. The local copy editing being done locally also make sense.

Now, who is going to handle the local stories updated with wire and making sure the same story does not appear on the wire pages?

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
