  1. They're never in any hurry to replace anyone at our shop either. It can go on for months and months.

  2. There would be no need to replace 8:34. Anyone who refers to a newspaper as a shop is useless in journalism.

  3. Why, yes Captain Smith, I'd love to take your job now that you've retired. I've noticed that this boat you've entrusted me with seems to be a little more vertical than usual, but sure, I can transition it to a digital focus. Where'd all that ice come from?

  4. 11:12:

_nyone who bothers to compl_in _bout whether the newsp_per is _ shop needs to put their pinky fingers back on the keyboard and get them out of the air.

The rest of us here in the building who ain't journalists but ensure the waiting public get to read your every amazing word - you know, us regular people? We realize that synonyms and variety make writing interesting.

  5. so what would you call it, 11:12 p.m.? A multi-platform information center? A dysfunctional data distribution system? Or how about sinking ship?

The postings on this blog are getting far too petty.

  9. Jim cleans up long after the fact.

He has to moderate constantly these days. There are people monitoring the site 24 hours a day for a chance to avoid the filter.

  11. Jim, I wasn't trying to flatter you.

You have created a toxic atmosphere where people try around the clock to post slams that will get by your filter.

Also, you wait way too long to dump some of the attacks. And you still allow too many of those.

  12. How do my efforts on comment moderation compare to your website's efforts? How much more would Gannett need to spend to moderate its sites' comments?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Why do you assume I work for Gannett?

To attempt to answer your question, the site I work with does not allow everyone to post as "Anonymous." That concept alone puts your site to shame.

I don't know how much more Gannett would need to spend. Why don't you do the legwork on that and get back to us?

  14. Does your site require posters' real names, with in-person registration, using photo IDs? If not, how is a made-up login name different from anonymous in discouraging the sort of comments you dislike?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Even with a made-up login name, you can require someone to log in and post under that name. Hence the term login name.

You also can require people to provide real info about themselves, even if it's never on display at the site. That cuts down on some of the attacks that you allow.

There would still be attacks, and a weak moderator like yourself would still permit them. So at this site, that change might not do a lot.

But a good moderator (not you) can make it work.

  16. Hey, 10:27 p.m., quit wasting our time. Don't like what you see, get out of here.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think you're an excellent moderator, Jim.

  18. Jim asked the questions, 11:10.

But I could say the same thing to you. If you don't like Gannett, then quit. Stop buying the products, and stop coming here.

  19. So who out there "likes" Gannett? Is there anyone out there - employee, subscriber - who "likes" the company?

If so, please tell us what you like. I'm sure corporate would be interested.

  20. I like that it annoys all of you so much that you think your never-ending whining and bitching will somehow change it.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
