In bits and pieces, I'm hearing more buzz about Gannett's plans to lower paywalls around content at some of its websites. One reader tells me July 1 could bring a wall to three company sites.
With that backdrop, I'm putting out a call for more information from staff at one of the company's smallest, least-discussed newspapers: The Spectrum, in St. George, Utah. Hi, there! What do you know?

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Jim,
ReplyDeleteObviously your blog has some major pull within the executive ranks. The reason for Thursday's company wide meeting is for him to explain the USA Today and News Corp "deal". It seems like Martore is on a warpath as this deal was leaked on the blog of all places.
Also, as it related St. George. We were told that if we said anything, we would be fired immediately personally by Bob Dickey.
Paywalls require content worth paying for, which can't be obtained elsewhere. How many Gannett papers meet that mark?
ReplyDeleteThis is stupid.
ReplyDeleteThe Thursday meeting has been scheduled for some time as one of Dave's quarterly updates. There is nothing to see here. Move along.
A pay wall would make perfect sense if newsrooms, I mean Information Centers, hadn't been rid of all of their experienced, quality writers. 5:45 is right about lack of content making a pay wall more of a wall than anything else. Why doesn't anyone get that? And why is corporate so dedicated to getting rid of the print product (the cash cow, regardless of how much it costs to print and distribute).
ReplyDeleteWho would pay for the same wire copy that they can get anywhere?
