Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteBlogger's software is apparently having problems posting and displaying comments. I hope this gets resolved soon.
ReplyDeleteFor Part 1 of this comment string, go here.
ReplyDeleteJim - why do you call comment threads "strings"? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what Curtis Rittle was in Burlington for yesterday?
ReplyDelete2:34 am: Good catch; I meant threads.

ReplyDeleteUSA at it again. Now into Denny's rest. Screw the carrier and diminish what meager profits they made just to get inside another restaurant. People read these things for free and put them on top of the stack which is a sale stopper. Not that they are selling anyway what with another shrinking of content. These things should be put on windshields like flyers used to be they are so thin. Any bets on who the next rest. will be to lose sales and lose the carrier money?
ReplyDeleteI've been reading the "paper" since I was 12 or so yrs of age. It started with the Sunday Comics and Parade sections and gradually the daily comics and then the paper. I've always had a paper in my home. I am 49 now and still read the paper, only twice a week now. Sundays and Thursday editions... of the Star Ledger... Not my old employer's papers... the content is not there anymore. :(
ReplyDeleteIt's been a bad day for Jim. He's made a lot of mistakes and gotten ridiculed badly. Now he is reviewing comments to control the criticism.
ReplyDeleteGod forbid he exercise some control over his own blo-- oh wait, you almost got me for a second.
ReplyDeleteTRICKY TRICKY TROLLS YOU LOT ARE.
What kind of raises are being given to Gannett employees these days? The freeze is over. How about some reports?
ReplyDeleteGood question, 11:01AM!
ReplyDeleteSay, 5/20 @ 10:10pm - what kind of raises are you all giving to employees, especially those that have had them frozen for several years?
In addition to paid downtown parking, sales folks in Des Moines are once again receiving raises.
ReplyDeleteMole here. We see that Jim is screening comments again. That means we have won again. Every time he has to start screening, the baseless rumors and hypercritical posts are delayed.
ReplyDeleteWhen he stops screening, he gets bashed. In other words, it's a win-win situation for us.
Why? Because Jim is nothing. The nameless gripers here are nothing. You will always lose. We will always win.

ReplyDeleteLegend in your own mind are you?
"The Game....You lost it".
Hello Mole...If Jim's nothing and the posters here are meaningless, why do you waste your time?
ReplyDeleteWho is the "you" and who is the "we"?
Sanity ... Jim has lost it.
ReplyDeleteEven with the rumors, this blog is a far more reliable source of information than the company.
ReplyDeletehey mole, i heard we're all supposed to be content makers or ad sellers. you're the dead-weight corporate overhead the properties are paying for. you produce nothing.
ReplyDelete"hello Mole" - said with the same disdain as "hello Neuman" - and why ARE you here? Jim must have something that entices you. ah yes, truth!
ReplyDeleteand you? you have weekend Gannettblog duty. i guess the plan is making the fellow that runs the blog the focus (Jim this, Jim that, bad day for Jim) but he is not the main source of information, it's the people from around the firm posting about their workplaces.
ReplyDeleteGosh you all are pathetic. Are you seriously wasting your time exchanging jabs about whether or not Jim and his blog are valuable? Why would you be here at all if it didn't mean something to you? It's like the folks who bitch about newspapers being dead but still pick one up every day. You should be grateful....
ReplyDeleteJIM;
ReplyDeleteThe Reno paper had a "print-only' story last Sunday (May 16) on the infamous Blue Book of mobsters and cheats who are barred from all gambling halls in the state.
The story was long and circular, with repetitive quotes. Of course the reporter did not track down anyone in the book. That might have taken some initiative. And by Tuesday the story was on the Website anyway.
Hey, 9:16 AM. Perhaps the reporter could not track down anyone in the "Blue Book" because its actually a "Black Book". If you're going to criticize, at least show that you have some memory of reading the story.
ReplyDeleteThere is a book on the Blue Book which names and interviews seven of them.
ReplyDeleteThere's also a book on the MIT gambling club, which used mathematical models to beat gambling tables. Everyone involved in that ended up in the Blue Book.
ReplyDeleteHey, guys ... Lost is on.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone get their COBRA bill yet?
ReplyDeleteIt's already May 23rd and mine has not yet come in the mail!
Hopefully this topic can carry into the thread for next week. As I look to leave Gannett, I tend to do and do as much research about a company before I get too serious about the application process. One concept that came up recently was the idea union representation. My unit is not unionized, and in many conversations both here and in prior jobs, unions have been demonized as an archaic entity that no longer has a place in today's society.
ReplyDeleteThe idea seems sound though: as Gannett tends to do whatever it wants with us, if we stood together against the Crystal Palace we may have more power than we do now. After all, top dogs never asked for any input from me regarding all of the cutbacks we've taken in the past year.
However, that 'third party' idea is often shot down by management -- it'll impede the employer-employee relationship (does one even really exist?).
But would it? Would employees have more collective bargaining power with a union? Or would union leaders simply look out for their own interests, ultimately not really changing what needs to change with Gannett and employee benefits.
Anybody have any insight? I believe some units are unionized -- has it helped any in terms of protecting you from cost cutting measures these past few years?
You should hope no one does much research into your writing ability.
ReplyDeleteYou are never going to get anyone to stand with you on anything. Gannett is not going to bow down to a blog run by a psycho and a couple dozen nameless posters.
You are the archaic entity.
Good job 11:15. You got the troll fired up.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually kind of funny to see a post from him/her now and then because it shows just how daft some folks are.
As for unions, I think you're definitely better off with them. They have been considerably weakened by the tanking economy, but the severance packages, etc., that union shops got seemed (for the most part) superior to what the non-union people received. Also, they are sometimes able to protect people with seniority, etc.
Beyond that, they often allow employees to negotiate for more equitable (and better pay). Nothing is perfect these days, but I would rather have a union than be without one. I don't have one at my shop and the working conditions couldn't get much worse.
You are at your shop. That shows how bad things are.
