Honolulu | Saying, 'aloha' by hitting the send key

"It's hard to close this chapter and begin a new one. But in doing so, I want to sincerely thank you for your dedication to The Honolulu Advertiser and wish you all the best."

-- U.S. newspaper division chief Bob Dickey, in an e-mail on Friday to Honolulu Advertiser employees, as Gannett prepared to sell the 600-employee newspaper to its cross-town rival. The deal was completed early this morning; GCI had owned the paper since 1993. About 300 jobs are expected to be cut between the combined newspapers. The sale reduces the number of Gannett dailies to an even 100 -- 83 in the United States, and 17 in the United Kingdom. (As I post this, however, the Advertiser is still listed as a GCI paper on Corporate's website.)

  2. By coincidence Mark Platte has resigned as the Advertiser's editor. He is becoming news director of Hawaii News Now, the joint news department for 3 TV stations in Honolulu.

  3. Dickey: Thanks for being so dedicated to us. Your note demonstrates either callousness or cluelessness as to your actions.
Hundreds of people are losing jobs because of your decision. I've seen people cry, others lose sleep. Some will have to move elsewhere; people are worrying about paying their mortgage.
Wish us the best when you kicked us to the curb? Wow

It wasn't anything personal, its just business.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
