Three Gannett newspapers have been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists in the group's 2009 Sigma Delta Chi Awards competition. Judges chose the winners from more than 1,300 entries in categories covering print, radio, television and online. The awards, which the professional trade group announced today, recognize outstanding work published or broadcast last year. Among those honored:
- Barb Arrigo, the Detroit Free Press, editorial writing, among papers with daily circulation of 100,000 or more, for “Michigan’s Budget Tightrope.”
- Mike Benischek, the Poughkeepsie Journal, sports column writing (daily circulation one to 50,000)
- Staff, Press & Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y., deadline online reporting for "Massacre on Front Street."
The Detroit News is not a Gannett paper, but it's a partner of Gannett in the JOA. The News won this SPJ award:

Indeed, the News was a Gannett paper until GCI sold it to MediaNews Group in, I believe, 2005.
