[Monday through Saturday for most; click image for bigger view]
A reader has given me a list of the nation's top 100 newspapers -- one that includes 12 published by Gannett. The figures in the table, above, are for Monday through Saturday (except USA Today's M-F), and came from the new Audit Bureau of Circulations report, which was released on Monday. I may post the Sunday figures later today. Also, I'm still trying to find a complete list of all GCI papers; for now, however, this list offers a partial view.
I've included two papers that aren't Gannett-owned: The Detroit News, and the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson -- the later because it's interesting to see, as you'd expect, the circulation it gained with last year's closing of GCI's Tucson Citizen.
Got a complete circulation list of all Gannett papers? Please write jimhopkins[at]gmail[dot-com]; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the rail, upper right.
It's too bad The Honolulu Advertiser was sold. Mike Cusato would have won another Gannett ring because he had the 2nd highest decline.
ReplyDeleteUm, USAT's circulation is M-F.
ReplyDeleteW0W, look at those figures. Down 10 percent across the board, and in the midst of an economic recovery. How much of this was deliberate, redlining economically-starved areas by dropping both coverage and circulation?
ReplyDeleteAn interesting aside about Cincinnati's circ. losses: It's rival, the Cincinnati Post, was shuttered on Dec. 31, 2007. The Enquirer's consistent circulation drops are evidence that it hasn't gained those readers. The Post circ. was at about 30,000 when it closed - not huge but still a considerable number of people to give up on print altogether.
ReplyDeleteThe Enquirer made substantial improvements to the print product as the Post was folding, most of which have been eliminated since, which may be a contributing factor, too, to people's decisions not to buy it (especially among longtime readers who expect more).
Good catch, 8:09 am; I've fixed that.
