In my quarterly income, ads comprised just 16%

Donations from crowdfunding aren't the most reliable source of income for self-employed journalist-bloggers like me. But Google and other advertising networks produce even less: Barely 16% of my income in the quarter ended last Wednesday. Most of my $968 in earnings was the $815 readers donated in March alone, when I began soliciting contributions again.

With your generosity over the next three months, I hope to get closer to my quarterly goal, as I find new ways to keep you up to date on all things Gannett.

I'm trying to earn $4,000 quarterly, mostly through sponsorships of $5 per reader, plus limited ad sales. Please use the "Donate" tool in the green rail, upper right. Or mail cash/checks payable to: Jim Hopkins, 584 Castro St. #823, San Francisco, Calif., 94114-2594.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
